Before today I didn't realize that USB bootloaders exist: they are firmware-only bootloaders that allow (in our case AVR) processors communicate directly to the USB port, without needing any USB-only hardware. A freeware USB bootloader is available. So I did a quick analysis to see if it might make sense in this project.
