How to make the captcha more robust

Hi!

I am a contributor to a website called "Oh Internet" - Lately it had some issues with signups from automated users. Looking at the captcha on the signup page, which uses recaptcha (see it here: http://ohinternet.com/index.php?title=Special:UserLogin&type=signup&returnto=Main_Page ), I found it has a lack of segmentation (no lines through words to defeat segmentation methods) and apparently it is too simple of a Captcha. The site admin wants me to do research to find a better captcha system. I am not a coder, but I thought I would post on the forum and get opinions on how to strengthen this captcha.

What steps can be made to strengthen the captcha and prevent anonymous signups? Is there a newer version? Do new features need to be installed?
