Hello, our Volusion ecommerce site has been getting slammed with 100's of spam orders from Indonesia.

...we want to add a Captcha form to the checkout page to help prevent this. Anyone know how to do that?

Many Thanks!
Alan

Well, you've come to the right place! reCaptcha is one of the leading
providers of Captcha services on the net!

For information on how to use reCaptcha, look here:
http://code.google.com/apis/recaptcha/intro.html

That page and other subpages will allow you to easily integrate
reCaptcha into your order forms. Let us know how it works!

Thanks Jamie for the warm welcome,

I'm wondering if you have specific information for Volusion ecommerce software, or perhaps a link to a conversation where people found a solution.

I am not a programmer, so this is quite a challenge for me to understand.

I think Volusion uses .ASP, but it would certainly help if I could access a knowledge base, with info from someone who has done it before with Volusion.

Thanks!

I'm not aware of anything of that type in the knowledgebase, however I can say that a tutorial for classic ASP is here: http://code.google.com/apis/recaptcha/docs/asp.html

I'm unable to provide any support specifically with Volusion, however the information in those documemnts should be more than sufficient to let you slap a reCAPTCHA on your order form.

You're the first person to mention Volusion on here, so it's unlikely
you're going to get an answer here, especially considering you're not
a programmer.

Have you tried Volusion's own support - though I don't hold out much
help - their forums[1] and wiki[2] seem a tad empty (as in bugger all
there apart from the placeholder posts) - looks like a support
ticket[3] is your only viable option.

Their Create an Email Form article[4] makes mention of a captcha, but
I'm not sure if that's going to be much use to you. Otherwise it
appears they don't provide any plug-in support for adding captcha's
which is aimed at non-programmers.

How attached are you to Volusion?

Thanks for the help, you seem to have found all the info I did :)

We're completely attached to Volusion because they are the #1 rated ecommerce software for non-programmers, so there is a larger user-base for issues like this one.

After 3 phone conversations with Volusion customer support today, it appears that there is no way to add a CAPTCHA form to the checkout page... at least not without paying someone to do it.

Any suggestions on who to hire? Thanks again!

We would be unable to provide names of people to contact.  Just Google around to try to find someone to help, or take a look at the links I provided and try to do it yourself.

Sorry I wasn't able to help you more!

Much the impression I got from their website, unfortunately. Even then
I'm not sure you're onto a winner - I've just spent 5 minutes poking
around their search engine finding out how you'd add server-side
stuff, and I wasn't impressed with what I (didn't) find.

Anyone in the office/company a hobbyist programmer for the relevant language?

Other than that, no - I've no suggestions that I'd like to be held to
on a public forum :)

I could be available, with come caveats: I'm a generalist software
engineer with about 35 years experience in the field, but I have no
experience with .ASP or Volusion. I have implemented reCAPTCHA using
PHP, which may or may not be relevant to your situation. Due to
health issues, I only work from home, so would need remote access to
your systems.

If that doesn't work for you, I can recommend a former employer:
Abacus Programming Corporation ( http://www.abacuscorp.com/ ).
They're a programming job shop with over forty years in the business
and do excellent work (some of their software flew in and helped
operate the Space Shuttle, among other things). Tell them I sent you.

Good luck.

Don't waste your money trying to pay someone to do this, save it for
when finally make the decision to ditch them.

You have no access to the one-page-checkout code and volusion won't
change the code even if you are willing to pay.

You could inplement a javascript captcha but the spammers are probably
calling the page directly.

What you could do is add a required dropdown custom field to the
checkout and change its alias regularly this will at least mean that
they can't automatically spam your page with a previously harvested
info it won't stop spam bots that are actively reading the page
though.

"We're completely attached to Volusion because they are the #1 rated

Total crock of marketing shite, its a pile of junk they have this veil
of simplicity but the admin panel is more complicated and badly
arranged that a product 1000 times more powerful like magento. Its the
most inflexible, featureless product with a ridiculous complexity to
its control and administration. If you read forum posts by actual
customers you'll find very little positive about them.

You can block IPs and IP ranges in the control panel under settings IP Firewall in my experience spammers witch to other ips regularly enough to make this ineffective unless you can upload large blocklists.

Thanks for the reply!

They must be using proxys or something, the ip's change constantly, yet they all originate from Indonesia according to the trace, but that could just be another proxy I suppose.

I'm interested to know what you suggest for an e-commerce solution, considering Volusion's apparent issues. Many thanks for your assistance!
