SSLHandshakeException Remote Host closed connection during handshake

We are trying to connect to the service at https://www.google.com/recaptcha/api/siteverify to validate the g-recaptcha-response we get from the UI widget.  We are starting to see this error since 8:50AM PST.  Would anybody on the Recaptcha team know, if there were any changes done on the service at around that time.

Or any remediary measures that we can take to not get this error when trying to validate the g-recaptcha-response?
