recaptcha suddenly stopped working

Running recaptcha V2 with php, and recaptcha suddenly stopped working today. The "Select all images with ..." box will appear normally, and the green checkbox will appear if the right images are selected, but then recaptcha sends the message that the user failed the captcha check. None of my code has changed recently, and my captcha keys appear to be up to date. Anybody else having this problem and have any ideas?

There is also a longer delay than expected to get a response when the captcha is submitted to google for checking. I took a look at the value of $responseKeys["success"] and found it seems to be Null, or in any case is displaying nothing when I echo it to the screen.

Is Google just not working in some geographical areas? I'm in Japan, and my user in New Zealand are having problems. Not sure about other regions.

I'm thinking it's a temporary google services/'networking problem to some regions, and interested in hearing if others in these regions are also having trouble today.

Now it's mysteriously working again, though I haven't changed the code at all or taken any other troubleshooting steps. What gives, Google?
