I'm using reCAPTCHA in WordPress 2.6.2. The title is the first bit of
this error:

Warning: pack() [function.pack]: Type H: illegal hex digit in /home/
content/r/b/e/rbeamer56/html/wp-content/plugins/wp-recaptcha/
recaptchalib.php on line 242

When I copy and paste all of the code into BBedit, line 242 is this:

Thing is, this exact text appears in several places before comments.

So, how do I fix this?

I am getting the same message
Warning: pack() [function.pack]: Type *: unknown format code in ../wp-
content/plugins/wp-recaptcha/recaptchalib.php on line 242..
I notice no one answered you inquiry... I looked at line 242 and 'H*'
in the pack funcion is supposed to be entered in hex format. I can't
deduce this further but have nowhere to turn but here for answers.....

If you have solved this could you respond and let me know what the
solution is?

Yeah, I have the same problem on Wordpress 2.6.2 and now 2.7. I'm
using Dreamhost for hosting, so I'm not sure if it's something having
to do with their PHP install. Anyone?? Mcrypt is turned on.

Ok--fixed it. I was using the standard keys in my mailhide boxes
rather than the mailhide keys. Done and fixed . . . whew!

Hmm, what do you mean? You used your reCAPTCHA keys for your MailHide
keys and it worked? I'm using DreamHost as well and I'm using the
separate keys (MailHide keys for MailHide, reCAPTCHA keys for
reCAPTCHA). Are you sure it wasn't something else? If you revert back
to your mailhide keys, do you get the warnings again? I would
appreciate your response.

Oh, I believe I know what the problem is now. You probably switched the keys around by accident. The Public MailHide key is not hexadecimal (0-F) while the private one IS. Get another set of keys here [ http://mailhide.recaptcha.net/apikey ] and then make SURE that you put the public key in the public field, and the private key in the private field. To further help distinguish them, the private key is all in capital letters while the public key has mixed cases (Lower case and Upper case). REMEMBER to clear your site's cache (If you have one, like wp-cache or wp-super cache) and your browser's cache, to see the changes take effect.
