Our reCAPTCHA v1 that has been working fine for YEARS started failing on and off this afternoon.  It'd be down for 10 minutes or so, then back up for about 10 minutes.

We're getting the following error:

Captcha failed: net.tanesha.recaptcha.ReCaptchaException: Cannot load URL: Tried all: '1' addresses, but could not connect over HTTP to server: 'api-verify.recaptcha.net', port: '80'

Any ideas?   We are seeing a lot of traffic coming through, much more than normal.

Hi Ripley -

Hope your day's going well! I'll admit I don't know much about reCaptcha, but, looking at the error, I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the DNS caching issue referenced in the Java docs. It doesn't explain why you intermittently connect, though it may be related. I'm more concerned that this might be a v1-sunset issue, since it's fallen out of support, but I hope the real answer is simple enough to get you through October. Good luck!

Cheers.

Jared,

Thanks for your response.

Yesterday we upgraded to V2 in our QA environment and are getting the same or similar response.  Last night, all responses were failing, this morning, they are working.

We'll check out the DNS Caching issue and see if that helps.  The doc makes it seem like it should not work at all if it's a caching issue, where we're seeing it working on and off throughout the day.

Thanks again!

Hello,

Your implementation should be connecting to the https://www.google.com/recaptcha/api/siteverify as noted here, not http://api-verify.recaptcha.net. Please update your code to reflect this. Additionally, reCAPTCHA v1 has been deprecated since May 2016. While your site’s implementation of v1 will continue to work, the newer version is needed to receive the latest updates.

Support,

Thank you.

Please clarify, do you mean for the V1 implementation, we should be using https://www.google.com/recaptcha/api/siteverify instead of http://api-verify.recaptcha.net?

I thought the https://www.google.com/recaptcha/api/siteverify was exclusively for V2.

We have upgraded to V2 and have deployed to our QA environment, however until about 10am this morning we were having the same type of issues with V2 as we were having in V1.

As of 10am this morning, both V1 and V2 seem to be working again.

Hello,

Sorry for the confusion. You are correct, https://www.google.com/api/siteverify is used for v2. For v1, http://api-verify.recaptcha.net is outdated and you should be using https://www.google.com/recaptcha/api/verify as noted here. Again, since v1 is deprecated, we strongly recommend upgrading all your implementations to v2 to receive the latest updates and features.
