Hi I can't seem to load the recaptcha webpage this morning (10.00 am
UK time) and the recaptcha on my webpage does not appear, which i
guess is linked (and means no one can get past that point).
is this a common problem?
It is obviously crucial that the uptime of the server is close to
100%.
Any input appreciated

Ok it's now about 11.20 am and the site has just come back up. perhaps
I was unlucky (having just installed my first recaptcha), but I hope
this is not a regular occurrence.

scary but it's just gone again (11.25) - i guess they are having
problems. off for coffee for me to decide whether to bypass captcha
for now. looks too unreliable

Same here Roger. It's been working fine up until today but seems to be
broken at the moment.
I'm in the UK too, BTW.

I've been using rcCaptcha for over a year now and this is the first
time I've seen problems like this. Some of my pages were rendered
useless and my mailbox is laden with queries from users.

Importantly, there is no fallback position that we can install on our
own servers for use when api.recaptcha.net is not contactable. This is
a significant architectural oversight.

Glad I'm not the only one! I have had to by-pass for now.
I was wondering if there was a way to test for a valid response from
the server. Might look into that when I have time.
perhaps they are upgrading, but i can't find any warning anywhere.

It's now 14.40 and the recaptcha website appears to be working
normally but I still don't have a recaptcha box on my webpage. I'm
wondering if this is a general problem.
so my bypass will have to remain in place for now.
Don't these things eat up your time!!

It seems that there a problem with recaptcha's DNS. This is what we
have found out...

"It appears that their 'NS2' is able to provide DNS results for the
'www' record, which is a CNAME to 'recaptcha.net', but it is unable to
return a result for 'recaptcha.net' by itself".

All in all, it seems like about half requests are getting DNS results
- so some people are able to get to the site and some aren't. We have
resort to our fallback position - not good. I asked recaptcha for a
fallback solution too, but they weren't interested.

Come on guys - please fix this issue and give us an offline backup
solution!!

Hi folks,

We're working on this issue. It appears to affect a portion of UK users. We'll get back to you when we know more.

Hi everybody,

This issue has now been fixed for about an hour. We're working on preventing this problem in the future and decreasing the time it takes to respond to these issues.

Thank you, that will be greatly appreciated. In addition, some kind of
notification system (even if it's just a simple RSS feed) of status
and outage would be greatly appreciated. As a very signifcant user of
reCAPTCHA, we had numerous support requests this morning while we were
still trying to understand what the problem was.

Thanks,

Thanks for your suggestion. We need to think a bit about what the best form for this system would be.

Also it seems $resp from recaptcha_check_answer only returns is_valid
as true or false. It would help if there was a 'not_reachable'
variable that we could test for. I hesitate to change (in my case)
recaptchalib.php for obvious reasons. It seems others have changed
this especially when used as a plugin (e.g. with drupal). But probably
for me if the outage was a rarity then I could make-do with letting
people through when the server was unreachable. Under that condition i
could send myself an email as notification.
Any views, solutions welcome.

Hi Everybody,

I am the project lead for reCAPTCHA and I just wanted to send a quick note explaining the issue we had yesterday with some users from the UK.

For a period of time (starting in the morning UK time), our DNS provider had a problem with one of their servers, which affected a portion of the traffic from the UK. The issue was outside of our control (all reCAPTCHA servers were up and running), and we worked with our DNS provider to resolve it as soon as it was discovered. We've used the same DNS provider for over a year now, and we've been very happy with their service. After this issue, however, we will work with them to ensure that such problems don't occur, and if necessary reevaluate our decision to stay with them.

Our system is built to maximize uptime, and we've had no serious outages since we began running it over a year ago. Yesterday's issue was an isolated event and we hope that it never happens again.

For the future, we will (1) work on our API to provide some way for users to check the health of reCAPTCHA, and (2) work with our DNS provider to ensure that this doesn't happen.

Please let us know if you have any questions or suggestions. We try to provide the best CAPTCHA service on the Web, and pride ourselves on having near perfect uptime.

Sincerely,
--Luis von Ahn

Hi Luis
I've just tested my recaptchas and once again they are not appearing -
it looks as if the server is again unreachable.
This is 22.00 UK time on 28 July 2008.

I can ping recaptcha.net from my servers located in Germany, US and
Australia, but not from here.

Hi folks,

Since this thread started, we've had a few people write to us about similar problems that they've had. In most cases, the issue is a problem with their local internet connection. If you have a problem pinging recaptcha.net, we'd appreciate you emailing us directly at sup...@recaptcha.net with the output from the following commands:

dig @ns1.peer1.net recaptcha.net
dig @ns2.peer1.net recaptcha.net
dig @ns1.peer1.net api.recaptcha.net
dig @ns2.peer1.net api.recaptcha.net
traceroute ns1.peer1.net
traceroute api.recaptcha.net

The original DNS issue (affecting a fraction of the users from the UK) has been fully fixed by our DNS provider, and it only affected a very small percentage of our traffic.

Thank you!

The captchas work now well, only the recaptcha.net website is down
again for me but I don't need the website. I have asked several
friends throughout the country to check also out so I make sure it's
not only my local i-net connection and when I can't access it, they
can't access it.
Anyway, if I still have problems with the captchas I will email you
with the output of what you've asked.

Hi all,

I'm using reCpatcha too. ReCaptcha.net works for me, but I'm getting
'Could not open socket' everytime I'm submitting the form with the
captcha. Rarely it just works and most of the time I'm just getting
the error.

I'm from The Netherlands btw and it's not my internet connection nor
my host, because it worked for me yesterday and all the days before,
so...

It's a bit of a critical situation, because my whole website is
depended on reCaptcha... For now I have disabled reCaptcha, but I fear
the spam bots.

Thanks in advantage,
InterCoder

As I've mentioned before, it's quite possible this is an unrelated issue.

I am still having intermittent complaints from users about reCaptcha
not appearing. I didn't have any complaints about it before last week.

When I try it, it's fine, so I'll have difficulty producing traces.

Hi Intercoder
I managed to download and install dig for windows as explained here:
http://members.shaw.ca/nicholas.fong/dig/
and along with tracert (command line) I managed to get all the answers
from my XP laptop.
I perhaps wrongly assumed it was relative to my ISP that the info was
required rather than relative to the website host.
pinging recaptcha.net working for me as at 20.20 UK time
Cheers All
