secureing $privatekey

Newbie here but I have recaptcha working great.  

I remembered though someone saying the $privatekey should be above the root directory.

So I put it up there with ../connections/verify.php

Then it came up with a page not found. 

I reliazed though that I needed to do the same with recaptchlib.php.

I pointed to recpatchalib.php with ../socalda.org/recaptchalib.php.  

Still doesnt work though.  

This one ../connections/verify.php points above the root to get verify with the $privatekey

This one ../socalda.org/recaptchalib.php points back to the root so verify can use recaptchlib.php 

Does anyone have any suggestions?
