I'm looking for information on a product called "nelsonite." I'm told it's
used to treat wood in a local furniture factory. Some employees think this
product may be hazardous to their health. I've been unable to locate any
information on this product, and I'm not really sure it's spelled correctly.
If anyone has information on this, please email me. Thanks!

Nelsonite is a wood stabilizer produced in three formulations by
Nelsonite Chemical Products, Inc., 2320 Oak Industrial Drive NE, Grand
Rapids, MI 49505. Phone 616/456-7098. My company, Artwood Industries,
Somerset, PA has used Nelsonite #30B32 for more than 20 years to
stabilize yellow pine and soft maple in the manufacture of our folding
leg sawhorse, the Porta-Fold Workhorse. We have had outstanding results
from this product and I have had occasion to see Workhorses in use in the
field for 15+ years that have withstood outdoor exposure, high humidity
and general adverse conditions that other stabilizers we have tested have
not been able to protect against (Woodlife, Thompson's, polyurethanes,
etc.).

Nelsonite Chemical makes MSDS sheets available. They advise, as do I, use
of good ventilation as well as protective breathing apparatus. Some 30 to
40% of the formulation is "proprietary". Through trial and error,
Artwood has had good results reducing the formulation with Naptha and
Mineral Spirits. This may give you some idea what the proprietary
formulation may contain (i.e., petroleum based).

As in many things wood, we must always weigh the results we want against
the cost of the means of obtaining them.

You will get terrific, cost-effective wood stabilization from Nelsonite.
You should not breathe or have prolonged skin contact with it. After 20
years use this is my humble opinion.

I would be happy to further discuss Artwood's experience with this
product with any concerned parties by email, snailmail or phone below.

Regards,
Tracey E. Meyers
