Does anyone know if there are any antique tool dealers in London?
I'm going there the 1st week in March. Also going to Darlington.
Any info would be welcome.
Thanks,
Donald

I posted this only a short while ago, but the turnover on rec.ww seems so great that some readers might not have seen it. Since the holiday season is approaching, it might be worthwhile repeating.

Apologies to seasoned readers.

The Old Tool Store at Spilsby is possibly within reach of Darlington,
depending on time to spare and access to a car.

Some UK addresses. They cannot be guaranteed. If giving up precious
time or travelling distances, please phone beforehand to check if they
are open.

Spilsby is about 30 miles east of Lincoln, about 12 miles west of
Skegness, a seaside resort.

There is a former Lancaster bomber station, RAF Hemswell at Hemswell
Cliff, near to a small village about 10 miles east of Gainsborough and
about 12 miles north of Lincoln where the hangars are divided into
antique shops of several kinds. There are some old tools. They are open
all the year round, and have a restaurant. The Hemswell Antique
Centres are on 01427 668389 (Omit leading zero from abroad). When
travelling southwards, do not go into Hemswell village, but proceed a
few hundred yards further to the roundabout and turn left. When I
visited, I felt it difficult to say whether a long detour would be
justified for the tools alone, but there are plenty of portable
antique items that might attract a SWMBO (or HWMBO) also. Regretably
some Pukey Craft shops as well.

Temple Newsam House
Outskirts of Leeds

An Elizabethan mansion in the care of Leeds City Council. Large range
of furniture. Extensive grounds for a walk.

Lotherton Hall
Lotherton
Nr Aberford
N Yorks

An easy car ride from Leeds or York. Also run by Leeds City Museum. It
is an Edwardian house formerly owned by a collector. It has High
Victorian and some Arts & Crafts Movement furniture, usually some
modern craft displays. Worth a visit since the furniture is more
interesting than the usual run-of-the-mill museum stuff. A bird garden
for the non-craft people.

Sheffield has the Abbeydale Steelworks, home of the first crucible
steel and water-powered forge for making scythe blades. Also the
buildings of the original settlement. Run my Sheffield City Museum.
I've been there. It is well worth a visit.

The Shepherd Wheel near Sheffield about 1-1/2 miles away consists of
two cutlery grinding workshops powered by a waterwheel, completely
restored and fully operational.

Kelham Island Museum includes a 12,000 hp steam engaine and describes
the living conditions of Sheffield workers and two self-employed
"Little Mesters" working full-time in specialist workshops, according to
my 1987 guide.
