I read somewhere that it's Ipe.

How'd your "friend" get a chunk of the Boardwalk, and
why would he want to make patio furniture out of it?

I know the wildwood boardwalk is made of ironwood from australia, and I
think i recall reading that when it was being put down they were basing it
on the AC boardwalk
that's my 2 cents

The boardwalk wood is indeed Ipe, and the benefit for outdoor furniture is
that it is very heavy (does not blow over), it is very strong (can use
thinner material), it is relatively tight grain which does not splinter
easily, it is dense and so should take heavy traffic, bangs, etc., and it is
naturally resistant to weather.

I am also considering making outdoor furniture from Ipe as a less expensive
material than teak.

2 east coast sources of Ipe are www.Advantagelumber.com and J.H. Monteath
Lumber (no web site) 1-800-922-1029 Old Bridge N.J.

Actually they didn't get a chunk of it. It was the usual:

"ah, listen.. you know that built-in pool furniture I wanted that looks like
the stuff in the movie ..., well can you make it out of the stuff they used
to make the boardwalk in Atlantic City. I can't remember what the guy said
it was, but it kinda looks like teak but less expensive."

What do you answer? yes. And go out, rent the movie and try and find someone
who knows what it is.

The wood is Ipe. Go to www.ironwoods.com and you'll get the story...I use
this stuff frequently and it's VERY strong and durable.
