I am working on modifying my home-made sand blasting cabinet, and the one
thing I can't figure out is a good way to build the bottom of the cabinet.

The top of the funnel is about 32" x 36" and will be made from ½" plywood
funneling down to some sort of drain for draining the sand.

What I haven't figured out yet is a good method for joining the 4 sides of
the funnel together to have adequate strength to hold 100 pounds or so of
sand, and a good method for a drain at the bottom of the funnel.

Any suggestions?

Dados it two side of two of the sides would be easiest, and coupled with an
epoxy should be as strong as you need. IF you need more, route a shallow
dado all 'round the exterior perimeter and band it. If you really want to
make sure, wrap the miters with angle iron.

good luck

What I am about to describe may sound like heresy, but hang in there.

Make a fiberglass container.

It is really pretty simple.

Build a mold frame using the cheapest construction lumber you can find.

The construction of this mold should be quick and dirty since it is only
used once, then scrapped.

Form the outer surfaces over this frame using 1/8" hardboard or whatever
else that is similar but less costly.

Cover any seams with 2" wide duct tape.

Spray on mold release (A gallon of PVA is about $10).

Get some 24 oz double bias glass ( A fancy way of specing 50" wide, 24 oz
per square yard, +/- 45 degree knitted glass), and some epoxy.

Lay up the container with 2, maybe 3 layers of glass.

When complete, destroy the mold and install finished piece.

Just finished building a 65 gallon holding tank for the boat I'm building
using the above. Can send you a URL which has pictures posted if you are
interested.

BTW, "holding tank" on a boat is where human waste is stored until you can
get back to shore and have it pumped out at a pump out station.

Having a holding tank that springs a leak or otherwise fails, is not an
option.

Build the funnel out of double layered MDF with the joints staggered. Essentially,
build the funnel and then build another funnel right on top of it, all glued together as
one mass. Finish it with marine epoxy for abrasion resistance.

It'll survive a long time, and you can reapply the epoxy at any time.
