I am ready to buy an ELU 3338 router. According to the literature, the
start switch is a thumb type while other ELU models use a toggle switch.
Since it will be used in a table, I need to know if the start switch can be
locked on, or if it must be held down. I don't have a local supplier that
stocks this model.

Thanks

The switch locks automatically and is no problem for table use.

I have the DeWalt 625, which I understand is just a higher horsepower verion of
the Elu 3338 (same as Elu 3339). It really has a slide switch. You flip it up
with your index finger to start it, then push down with your thumb to stop it.
So yes, it does lock on. Mine works fine in a router table.

Just a note:

I bought a 625 dewalt router. The major difference at the time was price as the
dewalt unit was cheaper. In talking with the dewalt people, the only major
difference between the Elu 3338 and 3339 is the Electronic Control, which allows
for speed control and soft starts. The 625 dewalt is the same as the 3339
except for color of plastic case. Elu, being owned by B & D, is making the 624
and 625 for dewalt. If you want to use this Elu 3338 router by hand, you may
want to step up to the 3339 or the dewalt 625. If you are using it a router
table only, the 624 dewalt or the 3338 is your answer.

I have fallen in love with my 625. Another source for the dewalt routers is the
D & B service centers. Many times, you can get a factory refurbed unit with the
full 2 yr warranty without the high price. I was able to get mine for around
$180. The outer case as in excellent condition, and have had no problems with
it whatsoever. And I can abuse tools in my job. If you catch them in a sale,
you could go cheaper.
Our local store has a 20 % off sale twice a year, with 50% off the accessories.
It's kind of a hidden secret in the Miami Valley!

If your not sure, call your local B&D rep. You'll find that more and more
contractors get their power tools this way!

Good Luck,
jiml

I think you were misled. The people you spoke with are thinking of the Elu 3337
which does not have the electronic speed control. The 3338 does but has lower HP
(2.25HP) than the 3339 (3HP). Otherwise the units are essentially identical.

???

Are you implying that the 3338 does *not* have electronic speed control
and soft start?

My 3338 sure does! ;^)

The difference between the 3338 and 3339 is power. 2 1/2 v 3 hp. The
3337 was the 2 1/2 hp non-variable speed model. In any case they are
wonderful routers. Very solidly built (at least those put together in
Switzerland) I think the Dewalts are assembled in Maryland. I havn't had
occassion to use the Dewalt models but It would seem that they couldn't be
much different.

I bought a Elu 3338 type 2 yesterday in Ontario, Canada from facebook marketplace.
I drove an hour to pick it up.
I've been reading blogs like this one on the Elu lately and realized that I shouldn't pass it up! So I guess thanks!
Got it for $35 without the fence. Not gloating just greatful that forms like this exist to be able to find the hidden gems that would otherwise still be collecting dust.
Thanks again.
