I have a router and a dovetail bit which I want to use to make some dovetail
joints. I don't have a dovetail jig for my router. Can I still make the
joints with the router? And does anybody have any tips on how to do this
neatly?
Thankyou heaps,
Null.

all younee is a fine cut saw and a bloody chisel, cut the tails at 6
degrees ,if you do enough of them you will do them better [no rounded
holes ]and in the end just as quick.
Do it right and they will look like sharp little darts ,something the
dovetail jigs and routers cannot do ...mjh

The best thing I ever saw was a brass template the you used a sharp
knife or pencil with. Check any catalog that has lots of hand
woodworking tools.
Oh yes, I have never tried to cut dove tails with a coping saw (your
other post) and doubt I could cut a straight enough line with one. I
suggest getting a dove tail saw. Oh yes, some scrap wood, and practice,
practice, practice...
For production, the Katie jig and two router tables, one with the dove
and one with the straight bit (but that would cost a lot of $$$, start
with the saw)

I asked and was told to buy:
1 A dovetail saw
2 A set of chisels
3 A marking gauge
4 Frank Klausz' videotape "Dovetail a Drawer"
Indespensible to have the tape. It is the best $18 or so you can spend. He
gives you a system that works very well, step by step. And the dovetailing ?
A ton of fun to do by hand.
Of course my efforts are not furniture grade, and in the beginning more like
1st grade. but through practie and more practice (ie unsuccesful attempts) I
am up to about 5th grade. The first joint I made that actually fit together
I have saved and it sits on a ledge in my workshop as a memento.
Oh, and the drawer works great :)
Hope this helps,
Geoff

I've never done a dovetail, but I figure doing a dovetail by hand is one of the
rights of passage in woodworking, sort of like cutting a thread on a lathe is to
metalworking.
I've still got on my desk a bunch of lathe-cut threads in various bits of brass
stock from when I learned how to do it. One is engraved by my mentor, "Roy's
first good thread, Jan 13 - 1983" and signed by him. Not only makes a great
conversation piece, but gives me real joy every time I look at it.
I figure when I get around to learning to hand-cut dovetails, it'll be the same
thing.
