I have a small store and I'm looking for a tole
painter to paint small decorative plaques. I
prefer someone in the Monterey Bay Area, CA. The
painter does not have to be a professional, a
homemaker is fine. I would like to see samples,
which can be submitted by e-mail or we can meet.
I would order a small quantity, and reorder as
needed. Please contact me at: davitt@german-
usa.com or call 831-393-0402.
Thank you,
Katharina

That's "Tole Painting", not "Tool Painting" Steve. I'm not clear on
what it is exactly, but I don't thing it involves painting scenes on
Diston saws...

Actually, tole painting is only on wood, Steve, and is an old
Scandinavian folk art IIRC. I've seen some that was quite nice. I
think there was even an article in FWW about it a few years back, but
I'm not sure about that.

It has at least as long a pedigree as chip carving, also Scandinavian.

People may call saw painting and cheap nailed pine with a coat of paint
tole painting, but that doesn't make it so.

I claim I'm always right, but as this group is only too glad to remind
me, that doesn't make it so :-).

Check out what a decorative paint job does to the price of cheaply made
furniture. Even crap jobs are being purchased for outrageous sums. Really
good stuff is rare but exquisite.

My wife is a very talented tole painter and instructor, her skills are at
least the equivalent of some good woodworkers I know (better than mine.)
Don't confuse the stuff you see at church bazaar sales with what talented
artists can do with paint on furniture and other objects.

Steve, why do you take this position with respect to tole painters? A neighbor
and friends got many of the tools enhancing our garage as we speak. Please
clarify!

true. but it is still called that. I can go to any craft store and buy cheep
pine cutout things and tole paint. makes me shudder. we are here in america
where things get deluded.

You wouldn't happen to have some links to some decent tole panting
examples would you? The only stuff I've ever seen going by that name is
the church bazaar stuff. Just like wall murals. 99.9% of the stuff you
see looks like garbage, which pales the good stuff by association.
