I went to Lowe's today to look at jointers. They had a new one, apparently
just assembled since it was still sitting on a pallet with a pallet jack
underneath it. It was a Shopline by Jet. This was a little after noon and
there was no one around to ask about the machine. I suppose they were all
at lunch. There was also no price on it. Has anyone had any experience with
this jointer? It only had a 3/4 hp motor. Is that enough? I've never used a
jointer before and I need some guidance.

Dick,

I haven't heard of the Shopline by Jet. How wide was the jointer? 3/4 HP
doesn't sound big enough for anything over a 4" capacity. I have a 6" Jet
that came with a 1 hp motor and I increased it to 1 1/2 hp after it burned
out. I do a lot of work with rough ash, oak, walnut, and maple so I stress
jointers and planes to the max. I would be real leery of a 3/4 horse
jointer.

Shopline is a new less expensive line by Jet for "Homeshops". Marketed to
compete with other less expensive lines of like tools being marketed by other
companies. This is the most charitable way I can express myself on subject.

I have this jointer, it's a 6" and works fine, it lacks some of the bells
and whistles but for only a few dollars more than some of the benchtop
modles out there it's a pretty good deal. I have not had any problems with
the power of the unit but all I've been doing is flattening some maple
boards and edge jointing them. Too bad they didn't put a wheel adjustment
on the infeed table, it's got the bumpandguess lever to adjust infeed
height. Strange they put a wheel adjustment on the outfeed table that you
seldom have to adjust???????OH yea, it's one HEAVY sob, very solid cast
iron.
Just MHO.

Is 3/4 hp enough?

Delta's 6" model 37-190 is 3/4 hp, as is their 6" model DJ-15. Jet's 6"
model JSL-6J is 3/4 hp, as is the Powermatic 54, also a 6" model.

So apparently 3/4 hp is enough to power a 6" jointer.

I won't disagree with any of the above, but I looked over a
'Shopline' 10" TS at bLowes last weekend. I was impressed that
it had a cast iron top and trunion assembly. The miter gauge
and fence appeared to be well made, solid, and very
functional. The saw also has a leg set, two extension wings
and looks to be almost the same overall size as the Jet 10"
contactor's model. (Which is what I thought it was from a
distance.) It does have a 15 amp universal motor, however.

At any rate, if I was just startin' out and onna budget, I'd
take a long look at this one. On the surface, it appears to be
a lotta saw for just under $300. YMMV.

Cheers, Bob

I have not heard of the Shopline Jet series, but I do know that on August
22, 1998, Jet will put out an all white series. I don't know
if this is the Shopline or not. Evidently they want some of the GREAT
WHITE following. Anyways, one of the guys was talking about the lever
adjustment on the infeed table. This thing is a beast and incompetent to
deal with, for me that is. If at all possible go for the Jet 6CSX with wheel
adjustments on the infeed and outfeed tables, and a closed stand. I just
bought it a couple of weeks ago and love it. It will set you back a few more
dollars, but well worth it. If your interested I can let you in on where to
get one for $455.

Hope this helps,
Dennis Swan
