Will be truckin' around The Continent next month and
would like to pick up some hand tools while there.
Want to get a set of Two Cherries cabinet chisels.
Am also looking for carving tools, perhaps Pfiefels.

Anything else to look for? (Note: have to be able
to carry it so forget suggesting getting a Felder.

thanks

Look for some interesting wood you wouldn't otherwise be able to get.

Sure didn't notice any bargains in Germany when I was there. If it
shows you anything, it was cheaper to buy Swiss Army knives and
compasses in the U.S. than in Switzerland. The presence of so much Elu
equipment did make my head swim though. They have 50Hz current over
there, does that make the power tools unsuable w/o mod here?

Czech made tools are very cheap and when I visited about 5 years ago,
the Czechs still had a reputation for being great machinests. In the
few German stores where I saw an Ulmia plane I recall they were pretty
expensive.

Austria may be a different story. If you stay away from Vienna and go
to say Salzberg, I found the prices pretty decent on food and lodging
and merchandise. Course, after spending a week in Switzerland anyplace
except maybe London looks cheap.

Good luck though.

Two Cherries will be Zwei Kirschsen in German. When I lived there, I
learned they are manufactured in a city near Solingen (near Dusseldorf,
possibly, Remscheidt, I can't recall). Chisels and carving tools are
available in some Baumarkt (hardware or Home Depot equivalent) stores. Not
all Baumarkt carry them.

If you are in the Oberaummergau area, they sell Zwei Kirschen carving tools
in some of the stores there. There is a lot of wood carving of Religious
figures done in the area.

pfeil carving tools are manufactured, I'm reasonably certain, in the Thun
Switzerland area. I drove by the factory 3 years ago. Visit Brienz
Switzerland and you will see a lot of wood carving. In addition there are a
couple of stores that sell pfeil woodcarving tools. Don't miss the Kanton
Holzschnitzerei (Woodcarving school) in Brienz. Take a walk through the
streets and look at all the carving done on the homes.

In Austria, visit Zell am See. There is a small "hardware" store at the end
of the main shopping area that sells Stubai carving tools. This is a great
place to visit. They wait on customers one at a time and wrap their
purchases in newsprin and write the receipt on a tear off pad of paper.
Don't miss it if you are in the area. Sorry, I can't recall the name of the
store.

You may already know this, but here are some vocabulary that may help.

Schnitzlerwerkzeuge = carving tools
Holzdildhauersätze - Sculpting tools
Kerbschnitzmesser - chip carving knives
Stechbeitel - bench chisel

Good Luck!

Isn't Germany where Bessey clamps are made?

Damn. Now I'm wishing I was going by ship and train rather
than plane and train. Oh for the days when weight wasn't an
issue and steamer trunks were the normal luggage.

Look at the Pfiels before you buy the 2-Cherries.
Both are nice, but I sure do love my lone Pfiel
(Swiss Made) gouge.

That would be Germany. Dunno specifically where, but I remember
seeing them in Munich hardware stores a few years ago on a similar
"tour".

Pfiels. Switzerland. But I wouldn't have a clue where.

Well, failing the Felder :-) I'd suggest in Austria looking for Stubai
chisels and carving tools. There are a lot of antique stores selling
all sorts of carved things in downtown Vienna, near where the Opera
house is. You can easily loose your marbles and the credit card in
that area... They'd know for sure where to find shops selling this
brand. Failing that, there is always the yellow pages. Stubai ranks
right up there with Nirvana for carving tools, IMHO. Forget Pfeil,
get Stubai.
