Finish on Outdoor Furniture?

I'm building a patio set out of white oak for a friend. He wants a dark red
finish. My questions is...

Can I use whatever stain, varnish, oil, etc I want to get the right color
and then seal it all with something like Thompson's? Or do I need to use
some sort of marine varnish? If so, can someone recommend some brand names?

Stain it to your desired shade and then use a good shellac (buttonlac)

What a shame, White Oak is waterproof and weathers so nice...if you left it
alone it would weather so nicely...

This is just my opinion. Use a Cabot stain to tint the wood to desired
color, then use Cabot's Satin Marine Grade Poly. I use it for all of my
outdoor product with great success. If you will be spraying it, I thin mine
with 8oz. Naphtha to every 64oz. of Poly.

The buttonlac variety is. Check out www.shellac.net . Something about the
wax in the buttons. Word is that some kayakers or canoe types use it
because it's water resistant and very hard.

I'll look into that. I didn't know there was shellac that was water proof
or should I say water resistant.

Do I have a good chance of finding Cabot's locally, or do I need to order
it?

When I restored Morris Minor Travellers (for none UK readers this is a
classic car from the 50's and 60's often nicknamed a Woody a shooting brake
by design) I used a microporours finish available from Burgess. This type
of finish has a slight gloss, any water that gets under the surface through
joints and other gaps is able to escape through the finish. Using yacht
varnish and pollys traps moisture and causes the finish to lift off. I have
used micoporous finishes for years and seen the results so I know it works

You need to get a stain that is UV tolerant. then use a clear oil stain with UV
protection.

Ummmm, there's alot of them? Maybe you could be a bit more specific. (You
could also look at www.shellac.net where it's recommended)
