Painting over oil finish?

I'm working on an electric guitar body, made of basswood on one side and
curly maple on the other. I applied a Varathane oil finish to the bare
wood, with mixed results. The maple took the oil finish beautifully, but
the basswood turned yellow and splotchy, with the end-grain going brownish
and the glue joints showing up white.

I now want to mask off the maple and spray-paint the basswood in an opaque
solid color.

What kind of paint should I use? How should I prepare the wood? Will the
oil finish seal it, or should I apply a primer? If so, what kind?

Any help would be appreciated.
