I wonder if anyone can help me with this.
I would like to build some barrister bookcases, but I'm having some
problems to find
good plans. My biggest doubts are - how to build the doors and how do
they work.
Is it all made in wood or do you need some metal parts ?

Thanks in advance for your time.

Rockler has plans using hardware (Accuglide, I think) and the hardware.
Meisel has plans without hardware, it uses dowels. There is also a set
of plans from Popular Woodworking without dowels. Part of the plans are
on the net, but not everything:

You can buy barrister bookcase hardware from Rocker (among others). In catalog
#09 it is on page 108, $11.99/pair. If you don't have a catalog you can order
one, as well as order on line at www.rocker.com.

I have an old set of these cases. The doors ride in some type of metal
bracket that is X shaped. This bracket runs through what appear to be
eye bolts. As the doors are raised, the X flattens towards the back of
the case.

This probably isn't much help, but it gives some idea.

There is a book from Wood magazine and Better Homes and Gardens called "Large
Furniture You Can Make".

It has some good plans for the bookcases. It uses a track and dowels for the
mechanism of the sliding doors.

Dear sir:
If you wish to obtain the old style barristers bookcase hardware, turn
of the century version, contact Van Dyke Restorers in Woonsocket SD.
They stock it. Website is www.vandyerestorers.com and they have a 1-
800 number. Regards, Oldwood.

Thank you for your sugestions.

Does any one have, or know where I can find, a simple diagram ?
(Images speak louder than words...)
I can't seem to access www.rocker.com
Also www.vandyerestorers.com is not available. Do you mean
www.vandykes.com ?

Thanks
NMac

Hi

See http://www.popularwoodworking.com/features/fea2.html

You can download a .pdf construction drawing showing the door guides.

If it is construction information you are looking for, try FWW #96 10/92 has an
article about building a set. If it is the hardware you are looking, Rockler
carries a set.

And TWENTY YEARS LATER we get the typo correction. How about a full URL?

https://www.rockler.com/barrister-bookcase-door-slides

Prices are now $19.99 / pair for the 9" and $24.99 for the 14.5". Funny
how two decades will do that.
