deskjet printing

Has anyone tried printing on veneer? Rockler sells the A4 blanks that run
through a deskjet printer so you can print anything on it and I guess you
could use it as almost anything. but how does it work, and does it look
real , so to speak.
any comments?

I used it in the wax printer at work to do a picture of a fairy for the lid
of a box, I made last year.

I cheated, and scanned the veneer sheet, and used that image as a background
layer, and adjusted the color and density of the fairy picture so the colors
came out right.

The biggest problem was getting a finish on it.

I would imagine that the ink would bleed pretty badly.

Go to your local art supply store, get a can of spray-on acrylic fixative
and apply liberally to the image. That should protect the ink from bleeding
while you finish over top of it.

While I can't claim to have used it for woodworking projects or specifically
with the Rockler A4 blanks mentioned, it works terrifically well for our
wine labels.

Some of the folks who make decals use Future floor stuff - apparently it
isn't a wax but some sort of acrylic finish. If the gloss is too much
they just spray a clear flat finish on top. Don't know how this would
work on wood.
