Some time ago I asked about replacing the Shopsmith main drive belt
with a segmented belt. Mark's reply urging caution because of the
"fingered" nature of the sheaves in the Shopsmith seemed
well-considered, and I dropped the idea. But curiosity wouldn't let
me alone, and I did need a new belt, so I tried it anyway.

Well, it seems to work very well; there seems to be no interference
between the segments of the belt and the ins-and-outs of the pulleys.
Assuming it will continue to work the same way, I would really
recommend it; it has reduced vibration considerably.

I ran it at various speeds with the end removed so that I could watch
the belt. This was under fluorescent lighting. It was kind of
trippy. Anyway, it looked like everything was going okay.

I used 36 links of a 1/2 inch Powertwist belt that I got from Grizzly.
There were 30 links left over. There needs to be some kind of
Powertwist Links Exchange Club.

Hi Will,
Very interesting post. I just had my ShopSmith
all apart to replace parts of the speed controller.
Never occured to me to do what you did.
I've owned my machine for almost 25 years (Bought it used)
and to the best of my knowledge it's still on the original
belts.
Now you have me wondering....

The exchange club sounds good to me. There must
be hundreds of guys out there that have a piece left
over that's *not quite* long enough to use for
anything. <G>
