I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the differences in the
DeWalt Jig saw and the Bosch Jig saw. I just checked Dejanews and didnt
find any results that had an answer even close. I did find that someone
recently mistook a Jig saw for a scroll saw :^). I will be buying one
shortly and would like someones opinion on these two saws as I have decided
that these look to be the best ones. Thank you in advance.

P.S. I am looking at the new DeWalt 321 model not the older one. The Bosch
one would be the aniversary edition.

You should search again. This has been discussed many times.

My dealer indicated that Dewalt has made two design changes since it's
inception and there are still problems with it.

I'd stick with the Bosch. It's still the king of the hill.

I got the Bosch a couple of years ago after reading great tool reports
in a number of magizines, and it is as good as they say.

One of the 1997 issues of "Shop Notes" has a comparison of the Bosch,
DeWalt, Hitachi, and I think Porter-Cable jig saws. If you read the
reviews from the guys who did the testing, it ended up being a draw
between Bosch, DeWalt, and Hitachi. There were things they
liked/disliked about each one.

I spent time at Berland's (Lombard, IL) and at Home Depot (Geneva, IL)
doing my own comparisons. The only comparison I did was based on "feel"
to answer the question "how happy will I be with this saw after using it
for a couple of hours straight."

I had already answered the question for my Sears Craftman jigsaw...and
it was not a positive answer.

I settled on the Bosch with the overhead grip. Didn't like the barrel
grip yet a good number of people (contractors, DIY, etc.) in this area
use them. To each his/her own.

My wonderful wife bought me the Bosch 50th anniversary jig saw for
Christmas. I have to tell you, there is no comparing this saw to the
Sears model it is replacing.

If you look at Berland's home page (http://www.thetoolman.com), you'll
see the 1587dvs is also their best selling saw. Mine is the 1587avs.

Good luck with whatever you buy.

As other have pointed out, this one has been hashed over a number of
times in rec.ww.

Folklore in some parts has it that Noah used a Bosch 1584VS to build
the Ark (for the naysayers, who point out things like the lack
of electricity or other bothersome details, I'll just point out that
rubbing wool together (and Noah presumably had lots of sheep)
will generate a fair amount of static electricity). :-)

Seriously though, the longevity of Boschs good reputation with the 158X
series contributes heavily to the plus column when doing these sorts of
comparisons. I'm attaching something I wrote and posted originally here
in rec.ww a while back in response to more or less the same question
(and have posted with revisions a number of times on this topic):

Given what I've observed:

1.) Everyone who has bought the Bosch 158X series jigsaws has been
fairly well satisfied (with rare exceptions) with the purchase.

2.) The Bosch 158X series jigsaws can usually be found with similar
or better pricing to the DeWalt via mail order, anyway (and usually
a package deal involving Bosch blades and a metal case can be had
for a marginal increase in price). You already know to heck out the
current "Anniversary Edition" deal.

3.) A few of the folks who bought the new DeWalt jigsaw have reported (in
rec.ww) returning them and getting the Bosch instead and being
happier (for whatever reasons) with the Bosch. One person, if I
recall correctly, mentioned not being happy with ease with which
blade deflection happens on the DeWalt, stated or implied that the
blade support wasn't as good on the DeWalt, and was happier with
the Bosch they bought after returning the DeWalt.

Given that most everyone who has the Bosch 158X has been happy with the
jigsaw and usually can't think of any way it could be radically
improved, it would seem to be the way to go IMHO. If nothing else,
there is a far greater base of good experience over a much longer
period of time with the Bosch than the others (i.e. we know the unit
has been durable for the vast majority of owners who have bothered to
post). So, all other things being fairly equal (I wouldn't make price
difference much of a factor unless it is >15 - 20%), I'd probably go
for the Bosch 1584VS (barrel handle) or Bosch 1587VS (top handle). The
"dustless" models (with vacuum hookup) are the 1584DVS and the
1587DVS.

Personal perspective: I have a 1584VS and it seems to do everything I
need from a jigsaw (used it a while back to remove a stubborn PVC
coupling from a toilet tank -- used it last to cut some 1 3/4" thick
red oak).

The best pricing is probably to be had by mail ordering a Bosch 1584VS
or a 1587VS from a mail order house like "International Tool
Corporation" or "Woodworkers Supply" with a case and some blades (they
usually have a bundle deal of some sort going).

I haven't used the Dewalt, but have used a Bosch (commercially) for several
years with zero problems.

Bosch is #1. I've used both the D handle and the barrel grip commercially for
years, and they have exceeded every expectation. I have never used another saw
that could come close to the "feel" of the Bosch. This is a quality engineered
tool which will far outlast any other in my opinion.

They invented it and it's still the best (Bosch)...made in Switzerland
(at least mine is...)

Perhaps a semi-interesting side note: To a certain extent, the manufacture of Bosch tools is a "cottage industry". I have a friend in a small, small town in Switzerland; he makes his living polishing metal. His shop is relatively small and employs one or two part-time helpers. When I visited him last, he had just establised a contract with Bosch to polish the bases of their small router. He leased and set up the necessary equipment, received that castings, polished them, and sent the off to the next destination. He had no real idea where these castings had come from, nor did he know where they were headed once they left his shop. The interesting thing to me was the critical eye he had for quality control. Although he was not charged with this responsibility, he packaged all suspect castings in separate containers so that the quality control folks might have an easier time of it.

I have the Bosch barrel grip model but it was an early one and gets
too warm when using it for heavy duty cutting. Great otherwise. I also
have an Hitachi barrell grip jig saw but the lever detent for the
orbital action control broke so I dont use it much anymore though it
is a heaver unit with loads of power. Ran across the top handle Bosch
on a return table at HD yesterday and it was marked down to 115.00 so
I sprange for it. Looks like someone used it maybe once before they
returned it.I started to get the Anny model so this one saves a few
bux and is practically the same. I have been playing around with it
and it really is smoothe. Get the Bosch and you wont regret it and
save a little money too.

Regars,

I had the Bosch and now have the DeWalt. I also use the Bosch at work.
The Bosch seems to be a little smoother.

I was talking to the technical evaluator for a British 'shed' - he was
enthusing about a new Bosch Jig saw (scroll saw) which will be released
soon to replace their current top end model.
This guy is a real tool enthusiast, and not easily impressed.
It will be interesting to see what they have come up with.
