I had been planning to buy a Jet 14" bandsaw at the show in Nashville
next weekend if I could get a deal. I was in Lowes this morning and
they had a 14" model 28-278 which was marked $360 something. It had
no motor. I asked the clerk what he had to have for it and he kinda
thought maybe $400 but he would have to check with the manager. I
said no thanks. I got to thinking about it and I could get a 3/4hp
motor from Grizzley for about $90.
Were I to make an offer to Lowes, what would be a fair price for this
saw? Amazon lists it for $599, no tax and free shipping.
Thanks,
Charlie Campney

I saw the 28-278 at Lowes and it was tagged at $492.
The model is not even listed on Delta's web page. I think it is made for
the large retailers only. When I looked at it, it was a disappointment.
The Jet is $100 more, but a whole lot more in value. I like Delta tools,
but not this one.
Look at the differences. 1 hp versus 3/4 hp. Solid closed base vs. open
base. The construction of the Jet is far superior than this model. If you
want a comparable Delta, you have to spend about $850. You may be able to
get the Jet with fence and miter also. They were running the special
through March 31 so be sure to ask about it.
Workbench has a review of bandsaws in the current issue. They fault the
Ridgid for the open base and this one looks even flimsier. They did not test
the 28-278 though. I'd offer $200, no more.

That's what I would do. It is OK to steal from big companies. They have a
lot of money and won't miss it. Just don't steal from me. Tell them the
blade is no good so you can get a spare. Oh, don't complain about prices
either when they try to make a profit.

3) It would mean that one was generally unfit for the company of honorable

4) It would make one guilty of fraud.
5) Unless one "contacted Delta" in person, the fraud committed would either
be wire or mail fraud and thus a federal offense.
6) One might have a conscience, thereby making it difficult to look that
fellow in the eye that one must look at each morning when shaving.
I think I would pass, if you don't mind.

I usually don't read Woody's excrement as I killfiled him ages ago for spewing
forth plain BS. Based on what I remember of old Woody, I would be willing to
bet that he is the one that defrauded Delta and he just doesn't have the
intestinal fortitude to stand up and admit to being a thief. Maybe Woody can
start a new list, "How to get free woodworking stuff AKA fraud in the shop"
1)Buy a Delta planer from a borg. Use it for 29 days, return it saying that
you are unhappy with its performance and would like to get a refund. Go to
another borg and repeat this procedure, if you have enough borgs you will never
have to buy blades and will always have a new planer.
2)Buy a bunch of Kbodies from the borg at Sears closeout price. Take the same
clamps back to the borg saying that you have lost your receipt. Sure you will
get only a store credit, but you have just doubled your money. You might even
use your "profit" to commit fraud #1
May karma bite the thieving jerks in the butt, if it hasn't already.

Of course I don't LIE / mislead to get them to send me what's missing.
Case in point-Ryobi. I called and asked for a manual for a cordless
weedwacker. It was already assembled but was missing the charge 'station'.
I have a box full of ac/dc transformers and really just need the required
charge voltage. After discussing the situation with me she took my name and
number and a week later I had a complete accessories bag. I was not
expecting that! Nor did I need most of what was in it. I guess it's easer
for them to send everything because they don't have to pull parts from the
line.
Buy the saw (talk them down some more). Call Jet and explain you bought it
from Lowes as an open unit which you knew parts were missing. Explain what
you think you're missing and ask how much those parts would cost. If it
costs you, it costs you. If they send them free of charge, you come back
here and tell 100,000 friends what a wonderful company Jet is to work with
(I have 3 or 4 tools myself). I would at least plan on shelling out for the
motor when figuring the cost of the unit. An in playing with it, you learn
more about it than if it's set up for you.

All Delta 14" bandsaws (Model 28-203) are identical, save for paint
color (Platinum/Grand models, etc. - one of the reasons that the casting
colors changed from gray to black), model number plate, and the option
to have Carter Guides installed (a dubious idea if you work in resinous
woods or need full resaw capability under the guide). What makes a
28-203 into a Model 28-278 or Model 28-299 is addition of a stand and
motor package.
The 28-275 and 28-278 are open stand, toggle switched, with 3/4 hp
Emerson. The 28-299 is closed stand, 24V magnetic switched, with 1 hp
Marathon.
The Model 28-275 and 28-278 are identical, save for something so minor
that I could not detect a difference with two saws standing side by
side. Lowes sells the 28-275 and 28-278 interchangeably (they stock
under 28-278, but actually have a mix of product). Look for the 28-275
listing on Delta's site - it goes for both.
Summary: If you prefer the heavier castings, iron trunnion, and larger
lower wheel bearings of the Delta 14" saw (as compared to the clones),
you can rest assured that you are getting the same basic saw from any
Delta vendor - just with a choice of stand, motor, and controls.
Recommendation:
Offer $300 for the saw (after all, you'll have to buy motor AND
controls), then order a Baldor 1.5 hp motor from Amazon to make it go -
you're now at less than $500. Even if you pop for an Delta enclosed
base ($153) and a magnetic control package from Grizz, etc. ($60), you
are just over $700 for what is now a 1.5 hp, Baldor-powered, upgraded
28-299 package.
Obviously you don't get the Delta fence or cute circle cutting fixture
this way; however, the FastTrack fence is superior to any of the stock
fences (at $70 with your 10% off birthday coupon at Woodcraft) and
shop-made circle cutting jigs cost about $3 in hardware and scrap wood.

I just want to preface this by saying I'm up in Canada, and of course,
everything is different up here, including Delta model numbers.
But up here we have a 28-274C and a 28-275C. I couldn't see a difference on
their website, and none of the local resellers could explain the difference
to me. Besides the $400 price difference, that is.
So I finally phoned Delta Canada, and talked to a real person. Turns out
the 274C (the cheaper one) is made in China, and the 275C is made in the US.
The parts are all interchangable (they order the 275C parts when they're
repairing a 274C), but I guess the FNF (fit and finish) should be better on
the 275C.
I'm not sure how this would relate to your 275/278 machines, but it sounds
kinda similar. FWIW, I got the 274C for about $600CDN, and the 275 was
close to $1000CDN. I used the savings to get the riser kit and an
aftermarket fence. I think up here all the Delta stuff has the Series 2000
warrantee, so I didn't see that the extra money was worth it. No problems
with the saw so far, besides the fact that the doors don't stay closed very
well on the wheel covers. I've tried bending the clips so it will hold on
better, but no joy yet. I'm thinking some Lee Valley magnets, or a
strategically placed elastic band will do the trick. But for now, as soon
as I turn on the say, both doors pop open and stay just cracked open a bit.
Oh yeah, and the table wasn't square to the blade out of the box. Didn't
think to check that right off, but it was easy to fix once I knew that's
what the problem was.

Interesting!
First time I've heard of a Delta 14" with Chinese content - although
they have been using raw Mexican castings on their U.S. made tools for a
few years. Please shoot me the URLs - if Delta has an export version in
Canada, it's the first I've heard of it - I'd like to see if one of our
northern neighbors can do a side-by-side with the domestic tool. With a
CDN $600 price, it might be an option for some folks.

Looking at the webpages gives you nothing to differentiate the units. I can
check my machine for any markings, if you like.
Here's a link to the 274C for sale ($650CDN, or $415US):
http://www.houseoftools.com/product.htm?pid=16187
Unfortunately, I couldn't find anyone that has both for sale on the web, so
an accurate price comparison could be determined. I'm going by memory when
I say the 274C was about $600 (within $20, anyways) when I special ordered
it from HD, and I think the price of the 275C was around $1000. Since they
couldn't tell me what the difference was, I wasn't too interested in the
upgrade. Both of them are 3/4 horse, 14" saws. They take the same
accessories, including the riser kit. The fasttrak fence was plug and play.

The Delta 14" that sell for $490 at Lowes is NOT the same as the 14" for

for less and looks it.

I wonder if Delta allows sales of the 274C in the US? At $600 CDN, it
would be a very good deal.
Have you compared the 274C with a US-built model re: castings, bearings,
etc.?
Todd
My guess is that if you don't like the fit and finish on the 275/278,
you won't like it on the 299 (closed stand) either - same saw (28-203),
just different bases/motor/controls. Parts numbers for the saws are
identical, with different parts numbers for the bases and
motor/controls.
I'm not sure when a saw is pulled off the rack and either boxed without
stand or as a 275/278, but I doubt that the saws destined for life on a
closed stand get any special treatment.
You can actually order a 28-203 from Lowes or a full service Delta
dealer (dumb idea - like $600 US, and you still have to come up with a
stand and motor).
Todd
When someone posted a query here about lower cost Delta band saws, I mentioned
what I had heard. Several people responded (emphatically) that Delta only made
one 14" band saw and that all were identical except for accessories (stand,
motor, guides, paint color, etc.).
I left it at that until this posting. --Wayne

Any of the current saws at Lowes, Woodcraft, etc. that I've seen are
badged 'Made in USA' on box and tool - something to check for in
addition to all the bits and pieces. Also - motors are usually badged
as well, with Delta International as the source for overseas stuff and
either Emerson or Marathon for the US 14".
