I live in a log cabin and a few years before we bought it (this is sad) somebody actually painted it. They
used brown paint but it's just not the same. Now it's my duty to remove the paint and put a clear coat on it.

My question is what are some good products to use on it ?? I'm not sure whether the wood is cedar or pine.
I'd like a good thick coat on it. Not like what Thompson's looks like when you put it on your deck. And I
surely don't want to have to apply another coat for a few years.

I have a brochure for Weather Seal is it any good ??

Thanks alot, Bob E.

My house has cedar siding, and after trying Behr & CWF clear wood
finishes -- and having to re-do every two years, I've switched to
Penofin. Penetrates like crazy, leaves a nice honey-amber color, and
lasts, well, two years so far, but no need to re-do this year. I've
heard tales from other users of getting about five years out of it.
Since I have no gutters on my cedar shake roof, the bottom two feet of
the siding kinda takes a beating from water splash, so I need to just
touch that up once in awhile. But other than that, I'm really pleased
with the product's performance, especially compared to the others I've
tried.

Cheers,
Jack J.

I used Behr liquid rawhide on my log house. Very good elastic finish
can
be purchased in a variety of hues including clear. Probably not great
if you are wanting a rustic appearance. I had to redo the south
exposure every three years due to sun damage, other three sides were
very good with two coats.

I have used house hold bleach on logs to remove discoloration and
lighten them up, then clear stain with burnt umber color, or your
choice, and then later some Thompson water seal. I would stay away from
anything very thick to avoid peeling. I use spar urethane on my Rustic
log furnishings pretty often so they are easy to care for but the log
cabin should breath a little and if polyurethane starts to peel it could
be a big problem. I used solid stain on a home with cedar siding that
had been painted white and peeled badly. It worked and I didn't need to
remove all the paint. As the paint peeled I just touched it up with the
solid stain. It was easy but not as pretty as transparent over bare
wood.

Hi Bob,

I have a yellow pine "real-log home which I built in 1990. I use a
product from Standart Tar Products Company, Inc item # WR2 CLEAR which
comes in five gallen pails @ $153 per pail. It is applied with a
regular pump-up garden sprayer and acts as a water repellant,
anti-fungicide and insecticide as well. I put it on about every 3-4
years depending on how it repells the water and how much anxiety I
expereince worrying about carpenter ants, etc. I have a 28'x 72' log
home with 8" logs 16 high less considerablewindow areas and I use about
15 gallons per application. -- liberally applied. Be advised the this
stuff is potent, strong smelling stuff so use protection for breathing
as well as for eyes. The mist may also cause some irritation to the
skin -- slight burnng and redness. Inspite of this draw back, it is
good for preventing a multitude of problems, especially molds, mildews
and insects -- as well as the water repelling feature. It can be tinted
to various shades if you like -- I use the clear and my logs have stayed
a nice redish yellow color now for 7 years. Standart Tar's phone
numbers are 414-873-7650 and fax - 414 873-7737. It 4 pails were
deliverd in 3 days ups no charge to me. The staff I talked to were very
helpful and knew right away what I was looking for. I learned about
this product from my Amish builder who has build a number of homes in
the area. I have not heard much good about Thompson weather seal

Hope this helps.
