Hi,
I am a woodworking newbie and have just built a desk out of MDO plywood
for my daughter (age 7).
What type of primer and paint would you recommend that would give a
long-lasting, durable, easily cleanable surface for the desk? My
daughter would like to paint her own designs onto the desk once the base
coat has been applied.

Thanks for your help.

I'd use any base primer in latex and would follow up with a couple of coats
of a "good" high gloss enamel. I'd allow it to dry for several days as
latex enamel will have a tendency to take its time about curing. It's easy
to clean and for a 7 year old little girl - the new "shiny" desk will also
be fun to wipe off and keep clean.

Congrats on the job for your little girl, proud papa.

As long as she is not going to be chewing on the desk...., your most durable
finish would be with an oil based enamel. Prime with the same brand as the
paint. An Alkyd based oil paint will dry more quickly. The oil based
enamels tend to produce a harder, and better sticking, and shinier finish if
you use a gloss.
If she is going to be doing most of the painting, go with the latex like Jim
mentioned.
