Hi all

Its a while since I have been to this ng, but I have a question.

I have read in the Deja News about finishes for Baby's toys etc, and they
say that Pure Tung Oil is Safe.

The question I have is " Is Danish OIl (Rustins) safe for use on a baby's
cradle, and how long should it dry before it can be used.?"

THanking You all in advance

Forget the oil. Use shellac, dries in an hour and useable the next day. A
little wax will make the cradle shine if you like that sort of thing. And
it is baby safe.. Well... except for the occasional puddle.

I used Watco Natural Danish Oil on a cherry cradle I built
about seven years ago (where does the time go?). The danish
oil is supposedly cured within 72 hours (for top-coating),
but I let is sit for about a week to make sure all the
solvents had evaporated. Some people recommend thirty
days. I finished it up with two or three coats of paste
wax. I have every confidence the finish was non-toxic when
the little bugger was dropped in. Besides, if it's a
cradle, the baby should graduate to something more stable (a
crib) before it's able to roll around and gnaw on things.

Just my thoughts,

I just completed a cradle. Following a suggestion I got from a
net posting like yours, I did the following. Two coats of
shellac (I used a 1# cut), light sanding (I used 400 grit sandpaper),
another coat of shellac, ending with one coat of a microcrystalline
wax (I used Renaissance brand). This worked quite well so far (its
been a week since I did this). On previous cradles, I used an
oil-based finish and was not happy because of the long cure time
and the strong fumes during the cure period. With the shellac/wax
finish, there's no odor and the cure is quite rapid. My experience
is that the cure time until there is no odor can be months for
the particular oil based finish I used (General Finishes brand).
