Try looking in www.dejanews.com for more info. Most of the reviews and
opinions I've read indicate that the Porter-Cable and DeWalt models
are the best.

I have the DeWalt 12V and I love it.

I have no experience with any but my DeWalt. I'd recommend it.

This discussion comes up periodically so you might find some back posts in

I had a Panasonic that had a chuck problem. I exchanged it for a Makita 14.4
and am very happy.

Hi Gurus,

I have the Dewalt 12V...
It's kinda heavy and took and hour or so to get used to the extra heft
after my makita Gave up the ghost.
But, It'll drive 3-1/2" deck screws into PT decking all day long and not
complain one wit.
I keep one battery in the chrger and one in the drill, and swap them out
when it runs down..... the dead one will be re-charged before the fresh
one is dead, just swap 'me and keep on going.

Well, Norm uses it, so it MUST be okay ;-)

2+ years (done lots of dry-wall, decks, WW'ing and general household
duty...) and still kicking long&strong,
So, I cannot comment on Customer Service, since i have never had the
need to use them.

I picked up a factory reconditioned 14.4V DeWalt via mail order from
Harbor Freight or Trendlines, for about $150. I think I paid another
~$40 for an extra battery. The drill started acting up after about 6
months, but I took it to DeWalt and they serviced it for me for free
even though the warranty had expired. I'm extremely satisfied with it.

Cheers,

I do residential and commercial construction and finish carpentry. I
have 3 Panasonic 12v drills and they work great. I like the Panasonic
because it is well balanced, re-charges very quickly, batteries last a
long time, the tool is light and powerful so good for production work.
For heavier drilling I use the DeWalt 18v, haven't bothered with my
Milwaukee Magnum very often since I got the 18v cordless. For general
screwing and drilling I would recomend the Panasonic 12v 15min charge
and extra high capacity battery. I can pre-drill and install 4.5"x4.5"
hinges with #12 screws all day long with the Panasonic, what I also like
about the tool is I can have 2 dead batteries, put one in the charger
for 5 minutes, put the second battery in after that and the charger will
catch up. When the batteries die it is a rather fast cut-off, either
full power or no power, not a consistant fade of power like the old
Makita's 9.6V.

I have the DeWalt 14.4V drill and saw combo. Came with 2 batteries and
a single charger. They both have worked very well for me and I highly
recommend them.

I wouldn't bother with the 18V model, unless you are into driving some
serious lag bolts with it. The 14.4V with 2 batteries is more than enough
for most any job. They also have a flashlight that can use the same
batteries, should you be so inclined.

Up here in Ottawa I went to the Home Depot and picked up the Porter Cable 12v
(kit 9862). I'm very impressed with it. I've used it to do some re-wiring
in my house - a 7/8th auger bit goes thru the joists quite readily, and requires two
hands on the drill to hold it steady. I chose this one over the Makita 12v since
it was a few bucks cheaper and was rated just higher in tourque (not that the ratings
were necessarily equivalent by any means!) I paid CAN$264 (+tax) here. The Makita
feels a bit better in the hand and the brushes are externally accessible, but the PC
had a more rugged housing IMO.

Cheers,
Rob
