A friend of mine has given me a Porter Cable 1002 1/4" router for use as
a second router. Can anyone tell me anything about this tool? Like: when
was it made; how much did it cost; availability of parts. I know it's not
a 1/2" plunger router but it's small, light and alot nicer than my Sears.

The base seems similar to the newer 1/2 PC's, are they interchangeable?

I would also like to offer my friend a reasonable price but I have no
idea what reasonable is for this, any opinions?

Thanks,
Philip

this is the venerable old 1000, in one of it's versions. it's a fine
old thing. they still make and sell it, I think that the model no. is
now up around 1007 or so... you should be able to get anything you
need for it. the bases interchange with the 690 routers. new I think
they sell for $100 $150, something like that. this is the machine that
put routers on the map for the small shop. you have a piece of history
in your hands...

Wow! There's some good info!
I have the PC 1001 and it has interchangeable 1/2" and 1/4" collets. Check
yours for the removeable tightening nut, maybe you can fit a 1/2" collet
into yours, too. This router has been good to me, I'd offer $75 if I ever
needed to replace it.
Congrats, Nancy

I have a PC1002 router, with PC1001 base, in near perfect/new condition, and it still works perfectly. Bought it in 1981 for trimming doors and mortising for hinges.
Just looked online, and found several that look pretty beat up for prices between $75 and $125. So what is one in near perfect condition worth?

Whatever someone is willing to give you for it, ultimately.
