How many other woman find Eric Sanford's latest
CutBacks article in Windsurf Magazine offensive and totally
insulting? If it were *funny,* that would be one
thing - but it isn't... He's no Dave Barry!
Frankly, I think the Editors exhibited poor judgement letting
this one past the copy desk!
Just when I thought the magazine was really becoming top
notch with useful, informative articles for all sailing
levels... and genders....
Eric obviously has run out of material and should
take a leave of absense to gain perspective on
what is funny and what is not.
IMHO, I believe he and the magazine have just about alienated
every female reader of Windsurf Magazine.

P.S. Sure, our gear, wetsuits, etc. are often color-matched, but
that's a "girl thing" and has nothing to do with windsurfing...

Maybe that's why I didn't get past the first paragraph. Now I'll have to
go back and read it to see what pissed you off.

I think a larger perspective can realized by comparing that article
with others in recent issues, in which he has used a self-depreciating
viewpoint. I'm thinking specifically of his comparison betweeen old
and new boards, and his "slogging" in the waves due to sub-optimal
technique. One could extrapolate this and say that probably Eric is
alienating himself! Another issue dealt with the alienation of
accountants, psychiatrists, and lawyers.
But isn't this nit picking? Eric is illuminatinng sterotypes and I
feel we would all be better off if these traits were considered
laughable and not practiced commonplace. Are you shooting at the
messenger?
BTW, yesterday I sailed four hours overpowered in steady building
SWerly. We were all pretty well toast afterwards, and while derigging
and enjoying the camraderie of the mixed company, I thought that the
wind was more of an equalizer - all had fun regardless of $ sex race,
etc.
If we censor ourselves to death there will be no stimulus for what
Monty Python call "intellectual debate" ! Cheers - Ian
I think Erric's been pretty weak lately, but I have to say that I liked
his latest effort. Sorry about that, maybe I'm just an unreconstructable
MC; either that or someone needs to lighten up.
What was said? I missed the article.

Dear Jane:
Please take a little of the money you spend on girl things and buy
yourself a sense of humor.
BTW, it is a well understood and accepted rule that women having
periods should not go into Grizzly bear country. There have been many
documented incidents of bear attacks on menstruating (sp?) women.
Maybe, just maybe, there might be a similar phenomena with sharks.
It IS sarcasm, so it points out something we would make fun of in real
life when we see it and it accentuates it to the absurd. Generally,
Eric's humor is fairly juvenile, but that is part of the humor. Although,
I will admit to enjoying this portion (of an otherwise improved magazine)
less in recent months.

Well, Eric has never tried for a Pulitzer, but most of his articles have
a point and I dont think this one is any different, other than I gave it
a 1 on the 0-10 chuckle meter.
He is not taking a shot at women windsurfers, he is pointing out that
from his "guy" view and despite a common enthusiasm for the sport his
stereotyped woman is less intrested in the latest tech stuff than his
stereotype guy and much more into a fashion statement than a guy. Without
saying it directly he is also pointing out that even in windsurfing women
are someting of a mystery to guys. Yea its kind of sexist but I dont
remember you getting all worked up over his other guy stereotype articles
so it appears to me that you may only see humor when it is at someone
elses expense.
Walter
But his commentary does state one thingloud and clear: he doesn't give a
flip about our opinion of his comments.
I think the primary people who are offended by his obvious satire are
those whose sensitivity and sense of humor have worn thin, probably quite
justifiably. And I think -- or at least hope -- that the only guys who
took it seriously are beyond hope anyway. Hopefully the only valid
objection is that even satire does reinforce and propagate a stereotype
among the already biased and the IQ-challenged, but that alone is a real
problem. Look at the U.S. Navy for obvious examples of the sexism problems
that still exist at all levels, and sexist satire helps foment that.
You might be a redneck if ... you 're a guy who takes MCP satire
seriously.
The problem is ... there are a lot of rednecks in pin-striped suits.

You really hurt Jack!
I know many women that could probalby shred circles around you
but probably would do the world a favor by simply jumping on your head.
Eric's comments are typical of the guy's mindlesnes. His only excuse
for such inane commentary is that he doesn't know any better.
But you.... yer pushin it.
Why don't you come out to Hawaii where you can meet some really friendly
windsurfing women?
come on over!!!!
