I'm seeking any helpful information for a windsurfing vacation in Cape
Cod. Where to sail, Sailboard shops, etc.

We're just starting the season here on the Cape and are looking forward to some great 'nukin this season.
Try Kalmus Beach in Hyannis, West Dennis Beach, Nauset et al.
Stop in and say hi to Steve Colby at Sound Sailboards, he's just back from Fla.
for the season - great shop - tell him Greg sent you. I'm heading to Aruba mid
May - Be back June 1. Look for my wind meter at Kalmus!

Ocean sailing at Chatham light with some pretty wicked tides and currents
can be awesome. Northeasterly winds can be excellent.

I sent meakai a note via AOL in response to an inquiry about Cape Cod but
here is a little more detail.

The best spot on the Cape is Kalmus Beach in Hyannis, about mid tricep of
the
Cape, which looks like an arm. The wind blows pretty dependably, it is on
the warmer water of the LI sound than further out on the Cape which faces
the
Atlantic. It has a long stone jetty that knocks down the waves so you get
wind and smooth water. It is shallow enough to stand for a couple hundred
feet out. I learned to transition from beachstarts to waterstarts in a
day
just by going a little deeper each time.

There's a big parking lot, rest rooms and snack bar. Fee of I think $8 to
park. Beach permit available for longer stays. Parking gets tight on
summer
weekends. It's known as a windsurfers beach, so the nonsailing public
knows
to stay out of the way. There is a roped off swimming area for them.
Sailors come from all over, of all abilities and they're friendly; it's
not
cliquish.

The New England Windsurfing Show and the CanAm Classic will be held at
Kalmus
May 19, 20, 21: Demos, free lessons, races, seminars, manufacturers
displays,
etc. See pages 116-117 of April Windsurfing Magazine. There will be
thousands of sailors there.

The local shop is Sound Sailboards, 223 Barnstable Road, on a main road
going
north out of Hyannis. Phone 508.771.3388. They'll give you condition
reports and are otherwise very helpful.

There are several spots around Falmouth and Woodshole, near the Cape's
armpit: Chappaquoit Beach on Buzzard's Bay; A little beach on the Sound
side I don't know the name of in Falmouth on Surf Drive just south of
where
Oyster Pond Road comes in; a little public beach in Woods Hole. The shop
in
Falmouth is Cape Sailboards, 661 Main Street, 508.540.8800.

There are more places further out on the Cape on both the ocean and bay
sides
that I don't know much about. I'll let someone who does talk about them.

See you there, wishing you strong winds.
