Sail repair:

Some "simple" repairs can be done by yourself, but rips involving
seams need special attention as well as special sewing machines
and sail tape. Monofilm is even more difficult to work with in
that any hole (from sewing) is a potential rip and inherently
makes the film less strong at that hole. A patch (sticker) done
with care and done on both sides of a monofilm rip can be as
strong if not stronger than the film itself, but you can't cross
a seam and expect it to hold. Normally a seam repair will require
a panel replacement, but I'm not the expert. For a >real good<
repair the best person in the mid atlantic is down at Hatteras.

He can do UPS shipping, but of course that adds to the cost of
repair. Some repairs (big multiple panel rips) are just not worth
while, but he can probably give you a better idea. I've had
numerous (7 - 10) sails repaired and refurbished with >never< a
complaint of the workmanship.

I believe, if you are in the Cape Cod area, that Jeffrey Brown of JB Sails
will also do repair.

I need some help on repairing a monofilm sail. I have a sail that I ripped
while engaged in an unintended manuever. The tear is right next to a seam. I
patched it with the stick on repair kit film but it didn't hold. I need this
sail for guests at my house, and don't relish buying a new one.

Are there any sail repair gurus out there? Can this be fixed? More to the

Sorry, I hit the tab key, then the backspace key and accidentally posted the
former message before it was complete. Continuing..

...I think repairs (sail, board, etc.) would make a good topic for the FAQ.
In any event, if someone has some thoughts about how I might fix my sail,
please let me know.

Several people recommended Peter LaWando to me. This particular saill is
probably not worth the investment, but I'm keeping Peter's name for future
refernce. I thought others might like to know that he comes highly
recommended.

see the man... hatteras island wind gear repair, peter lewando,
919.995.4819 of course there are others; above is only one i've

Before you decide the sail is not worth it, check the price.

I have been amazed at the low price of the monofilm repairs that I
have had done. Monofilm itself not too expensive, labor costs
reasonable.
