Hi Boarders,
I've been reading this group for about 9 months and have noticed the
varying degrees of ability and windsurfing locations that all of us
go to. What I've been wondering is if it is possible to start a thread
so that all that read this group can post to it and leave their name
or a nickname, What state they live in and what their favorite spot
is. So far, I've seen members writing from B.C., The Gorge, Maryland,
Florida, California and who knows where else. I would start this, but
my net ability is a little lacking. It would be helpful if someone would
include directions on how to thread onto this suggested post.
Hope to see this happen.

I live and sail in NJ. My favorite spot is Sandy Hook State Park. I prefer
this location since there is no other place in NJ where the NW winds are
better. From Fall to spring cold fronts that bring strong NW winds generate
a funnel effect on the bayside which leads to gorge like conditions. Strong
currents, great chop/rollers make for perfect launching ramps.

During the summer we have been getting excellent thermals which bring SE winds.
These SE winds make perfect oceanside sailing. If its going to be a hot sunny
day and the wind is forecasted to come from any southerly direction (S, SW, SE)
by 2pm the thermal builds into at least 5.0 conditions. Last week I had a 4.0
day and two 5.0 days from thermal action.

Ocean and bay sailing are easy access from the same parking lot. I'm local to
Seaside Park but I can't stand weeds so Sandy Hook is my favorite spot!

I'm in Corte Madera, California, just a bit north of San Francisco.
I took my first lesson on Key Largo, FL in 1979 and bought a Bic 200S
here a year later.

I sail all over the Bay Area, but my favorite spot is a little sandbar
break way out in the wilderness near Point Reyes. We call it Tubamancha.
I also get to Baja two times most years - a winter trip to the Gulf side
and a spring trip to the Pacific side.

Threading onto this topic depends on your newsreading software.
I use "rn", so I hit "F" for "followup" thread away.

Sailing area: Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island and Massachusetts
Favorite spots:
The lee shore of Conimicut point, Warwick, Rhode Island in a hot thermal or
tropical storm. Flat water sailing for half a mile behind a peninsula.
Ocean Grove beach, Swansea, Massachusetts. Low tide at the beach head gives a
windsurfer a chance to surf the swells and get an extra 5 mph. Best screaming
done there. Better than Ninigret beach, the hot speed sailing area in
Charlestown RI.

White Male, 27, not married (but have had the same girlfriend for 4 years), have
sailed since 1982, travelled a lot in Europe between 1986 and 1991 with my old
Toyota (more than 100.000 km), regatta sailing since 1991, have sailed Mistral and
Gaastra for ages, but sail F2/Pryde/F-Hot fins now. Unfortunately I have been too
busy to participate in all regattas this season because of work with my Master
Thesis in computer science. But now I am FREEEEEEEEEEEEE to go surfing! At least
when I am not working:-(

Favorite spots: The Stavanger area (Sola), Lista, Appelviken, Rønbjerg, Klitmøller,
Tarifa, Gruissan, Canos de Mecca, and other spots where the wind is strong.

Favorite conditions: 5 meter sail, 265 board, uncrowded beaches, and breaking
2-3 meter waves. But light wind conditions might be fun when we are more than five
sailors at the same level.

ID: Have changed sail number a lot. Begun with N-555 (didn't dare to get N-666
because I travelled a lot in Catholic countries), switched to N-15 in 1993, but
because of an error in the Sailing Federation I have had to switch to N-16.
Hopefully N-16 will remain my id for some time.

Location: Norway is a country in Europe, not a state:-) Tromsoe, my home town, is
far north in Norway. It's almost 70 degrees north and 2000 km north of Oslo.
Still we have ice free water and sail year round. In the summer we have 2 months
of midnight sun, that is the sun woun't dissappear under the horizon. In the winter
the sun disappears under the horizon for 2 months. The climate is coastal, which
means not to hot in the summer and not to cold in the winter. Still we have plenty
of snow in the winter and good snowboard and skiing conditions. Tromsoe has 50.000
inhabitans and is considered a medium size city in Norway. We have lots of
beautiful nature both inside and outside the city and the people are friendly and
warm hearted. Tromsoe is known for it's hospitality and are named "Paris of
the North", "the land of the midnight sun", and "the gate to the Arctic" to
mention the most common nick names. Tromsoe is located on and round an 25 km
long island in a long sound. We go sailing near the airport (Langnes) where we
have stored most of our equipment in containers. The open ocean is less than an
hour from the city, with huge waves and nice beaches. But we usually stay at
Langnes.

Other sports: I have practised wrestling at national level from the age of
seven and are a passionate soccer player (we call it football).

Now I have bored you enough and consumed a lot of bandwith. Send me a mail if you
need further details on Norway or Tromsoe.

Can waterstart like a maniac, have done 6(!!!!) pivot jibes, no carving
jibes. Do NOT sail in waves, thank you.

I like Seabrook NH, West Dennis Beach, Ned's Point, and Lake Quannapowitt.
I have spent time in Aruba, and intend to go back there next winter.

Boards: Mistral Shredder mostly, but if the wind gets strong, an E-Rock.
(Also, buried underneath, a Sailboard 355 and Mistral New Malibu)

Sails are Windwing Convertibles: 3.5, 4.0, 4.6, 5.2, 5.5, 6.7 plus odds and
ends from other makers. (Why the tiny sails in New England, you ask? Well,
they were bought for my girlfriend, but I have used them too).

Looking for a good bigger sail & maybe an Equipe, for the Lake.

Ok, ok, we haven't heard from anyone out here in Idaho yet....

I started boardsailing when the sport was still new, but I've been taking my
own sweet time in getting good at it. Of course, time _really_ starts from
when I first went to the Gorge, back in 1986. I like it when it blows out
east (i.e. east of the Cascades) since I'm a desert sort of person. 145#,
5'8", 8'9" Open Ocean with 3.9, 4.6, 5.3 and 5.7m^2 sails, conversant in
multiple systems of units, play soccer when I'm not sailing.

I sailed a coupla times in Bayeria when I put in a 9 mo. stint at school,
and when I can't sail in the Gorge, I'll be chasing the weather and morning
wind like everyone else here, to Lucky Peak, Lake Lowell (aka Lake Hole) and
Indian Creek Reservoir (aka "the mudhole").

Still in search of duck jibe, I do occasionally take to the air, and I'm
thinking of going shopping at an end of season sale this year.

Location - Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada
Email - crabb...@novell.burridgec.ns.ca
Sail locations - Yarmouth (Port Maitland Beach)
Experience -

Almost none .. still less than a year. However have made vast improvements
within my first 10 months .. (largely due to much help on this group)

Intermediate / beginner sailor
waterstarts, harness, footstrap use, quick tacks on short board.
low speed jibes 50%, carving jibes - in progress :)
duck jibes - about 40% in my dreams (0% reality).

Equipment -
Windsurf maui - 9'9" 130L
Sails 5.4, 6.4, 6.9

(who wrote 2.6 .. don't they evacuate your village in these conditions)

Yarmouth not one of great windsurfing locations from what I've gathered. July
had 3 days of sailing a 6.4. Rest of month has been less than 5 mph. Fog much
of month prevents even ocean sailing with monster sail... (sigh) Farmers say
first new moon in August brings wind .. hope so..

Goals -> No one in town (about 30 sailors) has completed a carving jibe.
So in my infinite wisdom (after watching the Hood river short board video and
seeing how "easy" carving jibes appear), I bet my brother-in-law (also just
starting windsurfing) that I would complete one carving jibe, from each tack,
by XMAS. (roughly within my first year of sailing) .. well its been a little
harder than I thought .. (grin)

However, I've mastered waterstarting, harness, still working on starboard
footstraps. But I have attempted a few planing jibes and am still hopeful...
will have to eat a lot of crow if I fail ..

Its good to have incentive :)

This is my first season so I'm spending a lot of time in the water instead of
on it but I'm finally starting to get the hang of turning.

Right now, I'm using 12' Mistral 1-design boards owned by the club as well as
their sails (4.3, 4.8, 6.3). Don't know that I'll ever want to try looping
but I think I might want to do some 1-design racing if I ever get good enough
to be competitive.

I may be a newbie surfing the net, but I am not a newbie sailing a surf board.
My name is Tim Dierauf, and I live in Oakland CA.

STATS:

Live in Oakland and Sail the Bay Area from Santa Cruz to Drakes Bay to the Delta.
I have visited San Carlos, Maui, and the George.

Boards: Mistral Equipe, 9' Mike's Lab, 8'10" Mike's Lab
9' Angulo Wave/Slolom, 8'6" Wave

Race Sails: Gastra 7.5; Windwing 6.2, 5.7, 5.2
Wave Sails: Ezzy 5.2, North Zeta 4.7, Neil Pride 4.2

Ability (for 8'6" wave board):
Jibe 95%
Tack 25%
Jumps (can get up there and land, but no tricks)

I enjoy good bumps, and waves that don't thrash the hell out of
you.

Personal:
Married (my wife sails) and one 9 month old son (does not sail).

A special request:
I used to have family that lived in Bonnie Dune. When visiting, I
would sail Waddell when it was happening. If conditions were not so
good, I would have an extended visit. Unfortunately my sister has
moved, and I am have stopped sailing Waddell for fear of doing the
big drive and getting skunked. If anybody on this net lives and
surfs near Santa Cruz, would you please drop me a note if the day is
setting up nicely.

Thanx,
Tim

Sail most often: Gorge - the Wall, the Hatchery, Doug's West
Oregon Coast - Florence, Pistol

Sails: Hurricanes 2.8 - 5.2 Haven't used the 2.8 yet. drat!

Boards: 8'1" Schroder (local Gorge shaper, polyester, pintail, like a Shuler)
the Gorge board
8'6" Zephyr (Scott Holt (local Gorge) epoxy, rounded pin, no-nose,
haven't sailed it yet, just got it yesterday!)
the Coast board.

Fins: 7 3/4", 8 1/4" Naish Wave-Killers (slotted, I admit it!). I may
get an 8 3/4"one for the light wind days.

Harness: PDX waist. It's ok. It's the only thing I own I would *not*
highly reccommend.

Van: '80 Ford Econoline. 205k miles. Killer stereo.

Sailing ability: Down the line, off the lip. But not like Brian Casiero.

OK, I'm Greg Sullivan, age 32, live in Newton, MA (USA). Sail an old E-rock.
All my sails are old. Favorite spots are Kalmus beach on Cape Cod and
Duxbury Bay on MA's South shore. I've been sailing since 1989. 40% jibes, I
generally only jump by mistake.

I'm a grad. student (Ph.D. computer science), so updating much of my gear will
have to wait 'til I graduate.

BTW, I have a baby daughter as of March (check out her pic.s on my www page!),
and I've been able to sail almost none of this season (I missed the entire
Spring). Anybody else out there a parent who has to juggle family, job, &
windsurfing?

Cheers.

1) Refine those negotiation skills to satisfy the domestic front.
2) Pray to the wind gods that they favor your non-working days.
3) Work near sailable water; go into work early, and leave early
(with your equipment, of course).
4) Get a floater that can carry an extra poundage, for marginal

Jonathan M. Richardson (Jthan)

Started sailing while on an undergraduate summer internship in
Berkeley back in 1983. The Cal sailing club was cheap ($30 for the
entire summer). The only other expense was a wetsuit. Next summer,
back in Boston, I bought a Windsurfer Rocket Express from Can Am
Sailcraft. It was obsolete the day I bought it and I regretted for a
long time. I bought a Sailboard 295 a few years later and a
fire-damaged Ultra Cat a few years later. While in graduate school I
had a tast for used or discounted stuff that never was exactly what I
wanted.

I sailed Nahant beach on weekends (near where I stashed my boards, no
room in my appartment) and Wellfleet Harbor on vacation (got a
connection on the Cape). Several road trips to Hatteras under my belt
(one just this spring). Recently I have added One Design Racing to my
life, it's a great way to have fun in light winds, and a great
challenge in heavy winds. Oh, and I bought some nice equipment with
my first few paychecks...

-Jonathan.

Job - Chemistry Professor

Nickname - People hae called me "dork" before but I don't have a nickname.

Board - Fanatic Cat

kept at it until I could finally stay on the board and sail a little.
Last year my wife bought me the Cat (used) as a Fathers day present and I
try to sail as often as I can. I'm just learning jibes, straps, water
starts, etc. I'm also starting to mumble about a short board but my wife
glares at me, so, maybe next year.

have sailed at Harrison Lake and I am hooked! I want more.

Been sailing in the surf for 10 years (never learnt on flat water, and
never bothered trying) and am, well, ok. (like one handed fowards)

Goal: to die sailing away into the sunset when I'm 70. (plus a

Ok here's my profile

name: Stephane Beland

occupation: Scientific programmer analyst

location: Socorro, NM (yep this is truly the desert!) for the last 2.5 years
Hawaii for 5 years before that
Montreal for 10 years before that
and before that ... i kind of forgot...

spots: - not sure yet ? Lakes around here are at least 2hours drive away
- sure miss my "happy hour" in Hawaii: leaving work at 4pm on
windy days, be on the water at 4:30pm sail till 6:30pm!

level: waterstarts 100%, jibes-90% (but i think i'm getting rusty),
duck-jibes use to be 50%, jumps: as much as possible, waves: where
are they?

equipment: - old 9'2" windurfing Hawaii board bought for $60 and some used
sails (Gastraa, North, Up).

misc: - broke a couple masts (including a North Wave "Heavy Duty" - right!)
broke a couple booms, broke a few fin boxes, ripped some sails,
walked on coral, smashed a thumb during a high speed head-to-head
collision, sailed with dolphins, whales, flying fish and some
friends too.
Never got rescued (i guess i'm a pretty good swimmer) but sure
helped a lot of people out of trouble.
- longest run: 15 miles (would have been a lot more fun if the had
not drop 3/4 of way there!)

These seem to be a useful resource to the group, and I was wondering if
anyone is collecting them to make them available by FTP or something. I
would volunteer, but as I only get about a 50% newsfeed, all you'd get is
half of them. Any other volunteers, or is someone already doing it?

Sail mostly the lakes, estuaries, and ocean around the Bay of Plenty. Have
sailed most places in NZ, also New Caladonia (Noumea) and Tahiti.

Favourite Spot: Plimmerton, Wellington NZ, consistent high winds, cross-onshore
waves that are seldom too big, protected bay so no nasty currents.

NE corner of Lake Rotorua in a SW, rig on the back lawn & sail all day.
Good chop and waist deep almost everywhere.

Boards: Bic Adagio, Tiga 260 with blown finbox, 8'4" High Voltage wave board

Sails: 6.2 Gaastra Slalomfoil Pro (1992, bad year, no upwind or low end)
5.5 Hewitt Slalom (really modern shape, NZ sails are up with the play)
5.3 Aerotech Wave (really high aspect, stable but slow)
5.0 Neil Pryde Mk I (my favourite, although pretty worn now)
4.5 Neil Pryde Wave NR (really fast for a wave sail, super stable)
3.7 Gaastra Wavefoil Pro (was Barbara Kendall's 5 years ago)

Hi Greg, Steve Kreis here in Hollywood, FL. Read your message on AOL and
decided to reply (first timer you know). My wife and I have a two year old
daughter and she's been coming sailing with us since she was four months
old. We sail at Virginia Key and spend two weeks in May of every year at
Cape Hatteras (Avon). We are short boarders---Naish, Wind & Surf,
Seatrend---with a full compliment of sails, some good, some on their last
sheets.

Juggling windsurfing and a kid is tough. Since we both sail, one of us has
to stay ashore while the other sails. It has worked out very well. Our
daughter loves to hang out in the van and she loves the beach.

Anyway, how do you like Delphi? I called them today for info. Coming from
Boston, Delphi offices must be convenient. I graduated from BU in
1972---philosophy and political science. I teach European History at
Florida Atlantic University. Take care dude.
