Hello all. In the current UK edition of boards magazine is a big two page
advert for a company called Pacific.
Their 1999 line-up includes a free ride camless sail from 3.7-6.2 and a
free ride twin cam sail from 5.7-8.2.
I was looking at the spec for the twin cam 8.2 and it sounded like any
other, is there anything wrong or missing here and any thoughts orm
comments on them, as the price makes it very tempting.
Anybody know if they have a website or a contact phone number for them ?

3 mini leech batterns
progressively twisting square head design
6mm triax film for durability
extensive tacl and clew reinforcement
internal battern tensioners
integral padded mast protector
twin position clew
woven foot protector
200gr polyester sleeve
180gr mylar panels
175my Dupont film
taped and glued seem
8mm tapered round battens
8.2m Area, 503 luff and 215 boom.

The blurb says :this twin cam freeride sailwith it's wide wind range,
offers a race sail feel with recreational ease. The progressively twisting
head and 3 mini leech battens giving it high wind stability."

It's only £199 new and they also make a "lance" c55 freeride 495 mast
which has an imcs of 27, diam of 37 and weight of 2.6kg, which costs
£149. The boom is £79 for 190-240.

Thanks

Duncan

Don't expect much from the sail. You'll get what you've paid. I own one (98'
Vmax). It also has 2 cams. It planes off quickly but it gets also quickly
overpowered. There was this test in german SURF mag where they tested Vfree.
It got pretty good results (even better than Neilpryde MPR) so it was not bad
at all.
Anyway, the sail is worth the price. But don't set your expectations too high.

The mast is good though. It's the same mast that you can buy from the GUN
sails under the name of TERMINATOR for quite a bit more money. They are
produced here in Slovenia and they don't produce them only for GUN and
PACIFIC. I bought the same mast here for about Ł90 and it's a perfectly good
mast.
I also own the boom and it's perfectly good for me too.
Fell free to ask anything else

Pacific sails are usualy crappy sails. After a good season they usualy tear
near the stiches and loose the right shape. I wouldnt buy then if i were you.
I know, ther are cheap, but there's a reason why. It better that you spend a
few DM more and get a good sail..

Hi
Pacific sails tend to look great on paper,
all the ones I've seen do not look so good on or off the water, Try to find a
dealer to see for yourself, I don't know where you are but Dave Noble
Windsurfing has them near Leicester.

The masts and booms however do seem to be OK.

My first step in evaluating any boom is to step on one side, grab the free side
with one hand, and pull up on it, to get an idea of its stiffness.

When I tried that with a Pacific boom of the early 90s, my hand kept going
towards the ceiling until the boom broke.

The boom, and all other Pacific products in the test pile after a cursory
examination indicated similar robustness, were tossed into a corner and
forgotten, never to be tested again.

I made the mistake of buying one a few years back. I concur with all the
comments. Absolute garbage, look great on paper, horrible shape when rigged,
cheap materials, Made in Poland, etc. First time out in 20 knots with a 5.8,
the main tubular battan snapped in half. Used it maybe two more times after
changing the battan and then gave the damn thing away.

Phil, what do do you have in mind writting 'Made in Poland, etc.' ?

Had this sail once and it is indeed a crap. But isn't made in Poland for
sure.
The only sailworks factory in Poland is Vamp.
Pacific is German company I think.

Besides, it sounds in your mouth as if all item made in Poland is only to be
thrown to basket,
which gets me crazy!

Andrzej, you are absolutely right. I can only agree with you.
Pacific is made in Germany. And, by the way, It's price is comparable to its
quality...

What do you have against Poland, your comment is really stupid, these sails are
not made in Poland.
