The wind failed to blow here on the last day of the PWA Almanarre world
cup-racing event. Despite the lack of racing, large crowds made the most of
the sunny weather and came to the contest site to mingle with the worlds top
racers and check out some of the new equipment available at the exhibition
on the beach. This is the first racing event on the PWA world tour calendar
for 1999 and seven rounds of course racing and a whole round of slalom were
completed.
The contest attracted an international fleet, which included the likes of
Micah Buzianis, Matt Pritchard, Finian Maynard and Christoffer Rappe who
were up against the best French national and international sailors including
Antoine Albeau, Patrice Belbeoc~B9h, Robert Teriitehau and Xavier Huart.
The racing was held under a new restriction limiting sailors to one board
for upwind racing, a new concept introduced by the PWA in a move to show
support for changes proposed to the Olympic racing Format. The idea for the
Olympics is to move from the existing One Design format over to Formula
Windsurfing, which basically allows sailors to use a single production board
and any three production sails for racing. The French tour has adopted this
system for their most recent races and the changes have proved very
successful.
The event was plagued for the first few days by torrential rain and strong
easterly winds, which made conditions tough on the racecourse. Micah
Buzianis dominated the racing on the opening day of the event and by winning
three out of four course races. Hot on his heels were Swedish sailor
Christoffer Rappe, Matt Pritchard, Antoine Albeau and Jimmy Diaz who all did
their best to close the gap on Buzianis for the remaining four rounds of
racing.
In the fifth round which was slalom, Finian Maynard the big guy from the
British Virgin Islands showed his skills in high winds by winning the final
ahead of Pritchard and Albeau.
On Saturday, the storm, which had brought the torrential rains finally,
passed over allowing the return of the regular Mistral winds and sunnier
weather.
Conditions for racing were excellent and sailors were pushed to their limits
as race director Didier Laffite decided to opt for high wind course racing
as opposed to slalom. Buzianis added another first to his string of
victories in the first of three exciting races and Antoine Albeau and Matt
Pritchard won the second and third respectively. Newcomer to the PWA, Pieter
Byle, from Holland showed that he may be a force to be reckoned with in the
future by taking a second place in race number seven. Despite heavy pressure
from the pack during the last few races Buzianis, the 28 year old American
who lives in Maui Hawaii did enough to hang on to victory.
Racing specialist, Buzianis will be pleased with a victory from his first
event of the season and Christoffer Rappe and Matt Pritchard will also both
be satisfied with podium positions when taking into consideration the
strength of the fleet. Antoine Albeau placed highest out of the French
sailors in fourth position and other notable performances making up the top
ten were from Patrice Belbioc~B9h, Jimmy Diaz, Finian Maynard, Janne
Rauhansuu, Thierry Belbioc~B9h and Charles Deleau.
The event showed without doubt that the one board rule for upwind racing can
work well and make racing more exciting for competitors and spectators
alike.
Quotes:
Micah Buzianis:
~B3It was a successful event, we had three days of racing including some
high
wind course racing that was pretty interesting. I enjoyed a little bit of it
but I did not really enjoy the 30 knot puffs, we were pushed to the limits.
I am pretty happy with victory though, I messed up in a few races and did
not do as well as I would have liked to but a win is a win! I never felt any
real pressure, I knew I had good speed and most of my mistakes were mental
and that I could come back and still post some good results~B2
Christoffer Rappe
~B3I sure enjoyed the racing, I did not enjoy the weather around it though
but
I think we had a lot of good races and a lot of different and challenging
conditions. I enjoyed it, I am very happy with second, I came here with all
new stuff and I have not been doing a lot of racing this winter so it turned
out pretty good~B2
Matt Pritchard
~B3You are never content with not winning but I will save that for the next
race. It was intense racing, we had rain, it poured with rain, it was windy,
offshore, onshore, it was all over the place but I love it, I love it!~B2
Pieter Byle
~B3In race number six I had a really good start and tacked at the perfect
time
and was first to the upwind mark ahead of Micah Buzianis, I came second and
am totally happy since it is my first PWA event. I am hoping to do the whole
world tour now, this week was really great racing and good fun~B2
Christophe Piaget managing director, AHD.
~B3I think it is a very good idea for the Olympic format to switch to
Formula
Windsurfing. We are pushing for this, it is very will be very good for
windsurfing and a lot more racers will try to do the Olympics. The racing
here at Almanarre has been perfect and has proved the one board idea works.
They were using the same board in 9 knots on the first day and then up to 25
knots yesterday, it is easy to produce a board that you can use for all
conditions. It was great for the spectators, no problem, it was perfect~B2
Benoit Treguilly (Bic Sport)
~B3Formula windsurfing is closer to normal windsurfing than the One Design
at
the Olympics. In France there have been events using the Formula Windsurfing
and they have been very popular. They proved they could race in six knots
and also in high winds on the same boards. It would be so much better for
the sport as it is more spectacular and more exciting to watch. The average
sailor does not want to sail on the One Design boards anymore, the Formula
Windsurfing would get more people and more money into the sport for sure, it
is something I am watching very closely~B2
NOTE FOR EDITORS,
Formula Windsurfing is the name of the proposed new format for Olympic
windsurfing. Formula Windsurfing is supported by the Professional
Windsurfers Association, the International Funboard Class Association and
the International Boardsailors Association, who would run the format. At the
moment, sailors have to use the Mistral One Design board: Formula
Windsurfing would give greater flexibility by allowing sailors to choose any
one production board and three production sails.

I appreciatte bruce's posting of the results and PWA prepared press
release. I'm not sure he was there.
The formula involved having just one board. I woould imagine most pros
used their biggest boards which are about 26" (67 cm) to 29" (75 cm)
wide. This would make sense because you can make a big board go in
strong winds while its tough to sail a small board underpowered. I bet
Matt Pritchard was on a 26.5 (68 cm) wide Mike's Lab board. He was most
likely using a Gaastra Total flow Phase III. This is Gaastra's latest
offering. It is not a Barry Spanier designed sail although it may have
been slightly tweeked ( i doubt it.)

Mike mentioned yesterday that he was on his smaller board -- 25 or
25.5 inch. Supposedly that was a partial reason for him doing better
at the stronger winds. What was Micah on?

When did Mike (Matt?) mention this? in the newsgroup? If he was using a
25" inch it would be cool. Maybe the ultra wides are just too wide?
Yesterday at the Marina -- either Wilzone or I actually asked him.
>If he was using a

After a lot of testing last summer, there is a consensus amogst the
local racing luminaries, together with Zajicek, that too wide leads to
severe performance limitations. "Downwind speed" (lack of) gets quoted
the most as the limitation. Most racers here (150-170 lbs. got their
boards at 25-26 in wide, and the heavier ones go 26.0 to 27.0. And
sailing here in Berkeley is often below the PWA wind limit... But I do
see Mike making some bigger boards for sailors on the East Coast and
elsewhere...
Regards,
D.
The word on the street is that Matt and Kevin are actually riding the
latest Neil Pryde (RX1) sails until Barry puts out his next generation race
sail. This may not entirely be accurate but I did hear it on the
grapevine. Although I am Neil Pryde rider, I can't wait to see what Barry
comes up with next for Gaastra. It is going to be a very interesting year.

I received my new lightwind board from Mike and it came out at 70cm (27").
I am on the East Coast and the winds are a little lighter than the SF Bay.
We are racing out here on 8.4m - 9.9m (8 -15mph), where as you guys are
racing probably on 7.1m - 8.4m (15 - 20mph).
BTW, I will be on the bay for the US Nationals in July. I Hope to hook up
with some of you guys when I am there.

What street did you hear that? Its a fact that they is on Gaastra. You
may have heard that Barry may have a set of Z1 (the current performance
standard) which he may use to compare against the performance of his
new race prototypes.

Hey marc. you'd be well served by coming ot PR in july to the PR
championships to warm up for the bay area. have you tried the new AHD
diamond 72? Its amazing.
All the best

That must be what they meant. I had heard from guys on Maui that Kevin and Matt bought *new* Neil Pryde sails for the season to use until Barry got a design down. I guess what they were doing is
using it as a benchmark as you said. That makes sense since they wouldn't want to alienate Gaastra by racing on Neil Pryde.

I got to try out the new AHD Diamond 72 in Florida a couple of weeks ago and it DOES rock! I was VERY impressed with the performance of it. It is almost as fast as a pure custom. I wish I could
get it in a lighter version (13lbs) which may make up for the slight performance hit. It planes sooooo early.
BTW, I am also using some new fins that are so fast. You should CHECK them out!! They are made by a guy in Newport, Kirst feddersen, who works with aerospace carbon for a living. I can't get
over the performance. Top end speed is better than Tectonics, and upwind is about the same. They are called FiberFoils. The web address is: http://www.fiberfoils.com/ Great FINS!!
Mine too. When I picked mine I saw yours was a blank. Actually mine is
like 27 and a quarter, one of the bigger around, I think. It's the
exact same board that the Z-27 is, Mike said. It is an amazingly
versatile board for its size, and it feels very loose and controllable
at various speeds. It must be said that Zajicek does keep ahead of the
curve though and makes stuff that really works. I'd pay very close
attention to what he does. He is a perfectionist too. Many a folk try
to analyze a shape when they see one but I doubt more than a few
really know all the minute (and sometimes mysterious) details that
affect a board's performance. Having stuff that is proven in the real
heats is something good.
Funny, I've said this many times -- when I brought my beloved Drops
FL-10 last year at the Marina, a beginner in the sport, everybody
thought I'm nuts... Now everybody is riding huge stuff, even the
lighter guys. I mean Wilzone is on a 27' Roberts, Fukushima is
getting something large too, other guys who swore in their 6.6's now
ride on 8.0+ sails... I only wish that the 9.0+ size sails could have
the same structurally solid feel as the 8.3's...
>I am on the East Coast and the winds are a little lighter than the SF Bay.
The Bay as a whole, yes. Not Berkeley though. I'd venture to guess
that the regulars can plane in 80% of the days they chose to sail, the
breeze ranging 8-14 mph. If I were sailing Crissy regularly I'd have
lived with a 25' board just fine...
>BTW, I will be on the bay for the US Nationals in July. I Hope to hook up
>with some of you guys when I am there.
You may see more than you wish... Don't come to Berkeley though if you're
unfamiliar with the area. It's ugly and you'll be disapointed. Go to Crissy
first... I'm sure you'll meet everybody.

Uh, no. This is not even close to within a hair of true. Completely
false. They are using non-Spanier Total Flows for racing for now, but
they will be using Spanier designed wave sails in San Carlos. Gaastra
Spanier designs.

Aloha,
Will is right. Sorry, Marc, but you misunderstood me...
Matt, Kev and Phil kept the last set of Z-1's they received from me as
"benchmarks", to compare with whatever new sails they use. They did not
get RX-1's.
Best regards, Kevin Ozee / Neil Pryde Maui

I stand corrected. Thanks!!
Make Money Fast, Easy, and with only $6.00
-----------------------------------------------------
M A K E M O N E Y!!
SERIOUSLY NO SCAMS! LOTS OF CASH, FAST AND COMPLETELY LEGAL,
THIS REALLY WORKS!!
THIS REALLY CAN MAKE YOU EASY MONEY!! IT WORKS!!!
BUT YOU HAVE TO FOLLOW IT TO ALETTER FOR IT TO WORK!!!!
A little while back, I was browsing through newsgroups,
just like you are now, and came across an article similar to
this that said you could make thousands of dollars within
weeks with only an initial investment of $6.00!
So I thought," Yeah, right, this must be a scam",
but like most of us, I was curious, so I kept reading.
Anyway, it said that you send $1.00 to each of
the 6 names and address stated in the article. You then place
your own name and address in the bottom of the list
at #6, and post the article in at least 200 newsgroups. (There
are thousands) No catch, that was it. So after thinking
it over, and talking to a few people first, I thought about
trying it.
I figured what have I got to lose except 6 stamps and $6.00,
right? Like most of us I was a little skeptical and a little
worried about the legal aspects of it all. So I checked it
out with the U.S. Post Office (1-800-725-2161) and they
confirmed that it is indeed legal! Then I invested the
measly $6.00. Well GUESS WHAT!!... within 7 days, I started
getting money in the mail! I was shocked! I figured it
would end soon, but the money just kept coming in. In my first
week, I made about $25.00. By the end of the second
week I had made a total of over $1,000.00! In the third week I
had over $10,000.00 and it's still growing. This is now
my fourth week and I have made a total of just over
$42,000.00and it's still coming in rapidly. It's certainly worth
$6.00, and 6 stamps. Let me tell you how this works and most
importantly, why it works....also, make sure you print a
copy of this article NOW, so you can get the information off of
it as you need it.
STEP 1: Get 6 separate pieces of paper and write the following
on each piece of paper "PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR MAILING
LIST." Now get 6 US $1.00 bills and place ONE inside EACH
of the 6 pieces of paper so the bill will not be seen
through the envelope to prevent thievery.
Next, place one paper in each of the 6 envelopes and seal
them. You should now have 6 sealed envelopes, each with
a piece of paper stating the above phrase, your name and
address, and a $1.00 bill. What you are doing is creating
a service by this.
THIS IS ABSOLUTELY LEGAL!
Mail the 6 envelopes to the following addresses:
#1) Trina, 5212 Coach Drive, Richmond, CA 94803
#2) Turner Brown, 24 Andrew Lane * Lansdale, PA * 19446
#3) Jerry Lacson, 1535 M. Adriatico St. ( SMC ) Malate, Manila
,Phillipines Zip 1000
#4) JDOG, P.O. Box 218 * Montgomeryville * PA * 18936
#5) Dan Lomuscio, 4000 Pemberton Drive * Charlotte, NC * 28210
#6) Liliac, 385 W. Brockton * Madison Heights * MI * 48071
STEP 2: MOST IMPORTANT! You MUST take the #1 name off the list
that you see above,
move the other names up (6 becomes 5, 5 becomes 4, etc...)
and add YOUR Name as number 6 on the list. STEP 3: Change
anything you need to, but try to keep this article as
close to original as possible. Now, post your amended
article to at least 200 newsgroups.
(I think there are close to 24,000 groups)
All you need is 200, but remember, the more you
post, the more money you make!
DIRECTIONS ---HOW TO POST TO NEWSGROUPS
Step 1) You do not need to re-type this entire letter to do your
own posting. Simply put your cursor at the beginning of
this letter and drag your cursor to the bottom of this
document, and select 'copy' from the edit menu.
This will copy the entire letter into the computer?s memory.
Step 2) Open a blank "notepad" file under accessories in windows
and place your cursor at the top of the blank
page.
From the 'edit' menu select 'paste'. This will paste
a copy of the letter into notepad so that you can add
your name to the list.
Step 3) Save your new notepad file as a .txt file. If you want
to do your postings in different sittings, you'll always
have this file to go back to.
Step 4) Use Netscape or Internet explorer and try searching
for various newsgroups (on-line forums, message boards,
chat sites, discussions.)
Step 5) Visit these message boards and post this article as
a new message by highlighting the text of this letter
and selecting paste from the edit menu. Fill in
the Subject, this will be the header that everyone sees
as they scroll through the list of postings in a
particular group, click the post message button.
You're done with your first one!
Congratulations...THAT'S IT!
All you have to do is jump to different newsgroups and post
away,
after you get the hang of it, it will take about 30 seconds
for each newsgroup!
**REMEMBER, THE MORE NEWSGROUPS YOU POST IN,
THE MORE MONEY YOU WILL MAKE!!
BUT YOU HAVE TO POST A MINIMUM OF 200**
That's it!
You will begin receiving money from around the world within
days!
You may eventually want to rent a P.O.Box due to the large
amount
of mail you will receive.
If you wish to stay anonymous, you can invent a name to use,
as long as the postman will deliver it.
**JUST MAKE SURE ALL THE ADDRESSES ARE CORRECT.**
Now the WHY part:
Out of 200 postings, say I receive only 5 replies
(a very low example). So then I made $5.00 with my name at #6
on the letter. Now, each of the 5 persons who just sent me
$1.00 make the MINIMUM 200 postings, each with my name at #5
and only 5 persons respond to each of the original 5, that is
another $25.00 for me, now those 25 each make 200 MINIMUM
posts with my name at #4 and only 5 replies each, I will bring
in an additional $125.00! Now, those 125 persons turn around and
post the MINIMUM 200 with my name at #3 and only receive 5
replies each, I will make an additional $626.00! OK,
now here is the fun part, each of those 625 persons post a
MINIMUM 200 letters with my name at #2 and they each
only receive 5 replies, that just made me $3,125.00!!!
Those 3,125 persons will all deliver this message to 200
newsgroups with my name at #1 and if still 5 persons per
200 newsgroups react I will receive $15,625,00! With a
original investment of only $6.00! AMAZING! When your name
is no longer on the list, you just take the latest posting
in the newsgroups, and send out another $6.00 to names on
the list, putting your name at number 6 again. And start
posting again. The thing to remember is, do you realize
that thousands of people all over the world are joining the
internet and reading these articles everyday,
JUST LIKE YOU are now!!
