Any advice appreciated on what is best to buy.
Would love a reasonably priced box that would fit a couple of booms and
a split 460 mast, is that possible?
Any good buy direct sites?
Views on the cheaper Thule boxes?
Many thanks
Edward

We've got a lot of info on car-top boxes out at Island Sports
http://www.islandsports.com/info_rr_sportboxes.htm ). You can do a little
bit of reading, or browse the different boxes.
If you're looking to buy, there's a Thule Fit Guide to help you determine
which other roof rack components you'll need to secure the beast onto your
vehicle, and you can order your box right there on the site.
Personally, I haven't used a rooftop box before - I seem to find some
strange satisfaction in my ability to cram everything I own into a two-door
hatchback.

I think they look great, and have been thinking of getting
one, does anybody have personal experience with them?

here's another tip: i found a thule box in a dumpster in hood river.
it had the lock cut out. that is what they do for warranty instead of
sending the whole thing back! i fixed it up, used it for a season, and
even traded it for a sail at a swap meet. i'm still using my dumpster
diving in the form of a naish noa II 5.5!!
forget the roofbox. for $900 you can buy a ford econoline 150 van!
arg! yuppies!

It can hold 5 sails, two masts and my boom which comes to pieces.
It is great particularly on family holidays when I dont want windsurfing kit in
the car.
You can tie one (or more) short boards on the top.
I drilled two small holes in the bottom to let water out.
If you want to carry small objects (instead on windsurfing gear), you need a
long pole with a hook on the end to get them out.
Putting it on the car or taking it off is a two man job. - Unless you can
arrange a pulley in your garage. Without that you need to keep it on the car, as
putting it on the car for a single windsurfing session is to much trouble IMHO.

Instead, we purchased a Packasport 71 XL. It looks very similar to the
Quiverack, and is the longest box that we could find. It is made
specifically for windsurfing, unlike the Thule or Yakima boxes.
Bad news is it is not cheap, I think it was $700 or more. (3 years ago)
Check it out at www.packasport.com

from the web sites, it appears that the quiverack may be a bit longer
than
the longest packasport. I understand that their longest one will hold
something 262 cm long, and so is just long enough to hold a 520 2 piece
mast. the gull-door version looses 1 cm, but i am told it will still
take
a 520 mast. the gull door looks particularly useful for carrying things
other than windsurfing gear.

I was under the impression that it wouldn't hold a 520, and I recall that
this was confirmed with the sales-people when I emailed them. This is due to
the length of the ferulle, that joins the two parts. The ferrulle is normally
at least another 10cm, so one piece is going to be larger than 262cm I would
think. But, I never actually attempted to fit one inside the quiverack.
Paul Scrutton
that makes sense, i guess maybe they said a 500 cm mast.

We sell the 71XL (among other Thule and Packasport boxes) online at Island

I've had one for about a year now.
Got it specifically because it would hold the 560 masts and because it hinges at
the front instead of the side.
Right now, I'm carrying 2 masts, 2 booms, a Synthesis 7.5, a quiver of
Interfaces (6.1, 5.5, 4.9, 4.4), a couple of mast bases, a set of jumper cables,
and assorted small parts.
I like it.
I'm still trying to sell the Yakima Space Case that it replaces.
Anybody around the Phila PA area looking for a good rooftop box?
For what it's worth, the Yak case holds considerably more than the 71XL barring,
of course the 560 masts...

560 cm masts? That seems awfully long, especially for a 7.5 Synthesis
as you biggest sail...
Andreas
I got mine about the same time as you got yours - I like it too. Really
looks good and holds a bunch of stuff. It even survived a San Carlos
trip with surfboards strapped ontop of the 71XL!
