I have friend who is 6' , 190 lbs and in market
for a small board for bump & jump and just plain
sailing in strong winds.

He is intermediate learning to carve jibe and has
choice of new hifly ('95) at $1000 cdn or new
Fanatic ('93) at $600 cdn. Both come with fin and
straps.

Just looking for comments from users that I can
pass along.

I'm happily using a '94 HiFLy 265. I've seen the 275 in
shops and it looks like a great board to me. It's thinner
in the tail than the 265 so not as much of a no-nose.
The rockerline in back isn't as flat - looks more turny.
Straps are a little closer to the centerline and are
set a little farther forward. Should all help for making
it easier to sail in high unsteady wind. I love the smooth
ride of my HiFly compared to my Gecko 278. The HiFly 275
looks to be in between in size. I'm 6' 185-190. My dad
(~ same size) had the HiFly 265 in Michigan/Ohio last year
and wants something a little bigger & easier. The HiFly 275
is hi hi on his list. I'd love to hear others' opinions too.

I have the Fanatic Wild 260 and like it a lot. It's a polyethelene board so
it has a soft comfortable ride, it was cheap, and seems indestructible. But
because it's a poly board, it's heavy and doesn't quite jump on a plane; I
don't mind that because I can sail my other board, until I know I can plane
the 260. It's best feature is how great it turns - jibes very nicely. Its
got soft thin rails. However, it might not be good for your friend because
at 80 liters it'll sink like a rock, if its not blowing pretty hard. He may
want to consider the Wild 270 which is a wave shape at 95 liters.

Hi Dave
I'm not sure about the Fanatic Wild, I assume because of
the weight you are talking of the WILD 270 or 260 (cm). The first
is originally the MAMBA, the second the BOA shape. I own a
MAMBA (in the HOT version, which is about 1 kg lighter) and
can definitely say, it is a fantastic wave-slalom board, very
easy to handle and best for upgrading skills. (My weight is
69 kg.) The BOA shape is, although upgraded in 92 or 93, still
not very good, I don't like it, because the board is too large.
But anyway, if you have to pay $600 cdn for the FANATIC, that is
it not worth, because the shape is very old (no NO NOSE). I've
seen the 93 Wild's (new ones) in Germay for about 300 DM, which
is right now about $200 US. So I would recommend you, if the
HIFLY is really a new (NO NOSE) shape, the HIFLY. I just bought
me the HIFLY 265RX, which is an extreme NO NOSE race shape,
still relatively easy to ride and a very very very very fast thing.
So long, Peter

Although the Fanatic Wild 260 was always reputed to be a good board (for
a poly sinker), the 270 was considered to be pretty much a dog. As an
alternative the Mamba was recommended because of its better
construction. I have never sailed either, but this is what I have
gleaned from many comments and writeups.
Hiflys are getting good reviews now... Have you considered the Tigas?
Didn't see original postings of this thread, but for a decent poly board
that will plane and do everything nicely (and cheap!) at around 85-90
litres, its hard to beat the old 260 from Tiga.
I have one, and at 155#, it sails everything from 4.5 to 6.0. Could
even go down to 4.0 OK. For an old style board, it smokes in
overpowered 5.5 conditions, especially when things get rough !

GO With The Hi Fly!
It was just reviewed in the latest issue of Windsurfing Mag.
I have 2 Hiflys a 265 PX 3 seasons old and a 295 px I just bought this
spring.
Great footstraps, Powerbox fin system, VERY DURABLE!
