Ken Winner who literally crushed this year's competition on a new "flapper
board", commented that the fusion of a vacation destination along with the
Nationals was the only way to do it.

The American Airlines US Windsurfing National Championships and Festival in
the US Virgin Islands was FANTASTIC!! There were nearly 300 people down in
St. Thomas for this event. Many were complete families! We also had an
outstanding international showing. Racers came from Canada, Mexico,
Argentina, Brazil, Cayman Islands, Finland, Hungry, Japan and of course the
BVI's- Tortola, etc. As well as from all over the United States. The wind
was good to us too, enough for racing, sometimes light and fluky, but we
had wind!

There were over 300 people at the Welcoming Party on Monday night at the
Doubletree Sapphire Beach Hotel's beach bar. The food was done by Bill's
(that's US Windsurfing president Bill's) Texas Pit BBQ - very good and
everyone left stuffed!

There were also special Junior Clinics during the week hosted by Tinho
Dornellas, and the West Indies Windsurfing shop for local kids or those who
came with racing parents. On Saturday the kids had a triangle course set
and crossed the start line in their own race. They used the new
Mistral/Disney kids rigs, brought down especially for the event. It just
figured that the wind would be the strongest during the kids regatta! There
were 27 kids total, with 17 of them having their first windsurfing
experience ever at the National Championships in St Thomas!

The Awards Ceremony at the Safire Beach was beautifully done and the food
was most excellent. The event organizers, secured great award sponsorship
from "Little Switzerland", the local importer for Rolex Watches and
Waterford Crystal in the Caribbean. Little Switzerland brought to the
awards table some of the most impressive trophies I ever seen. The
Caribbean 42 Fleet with 6 divisions, were given brilliant, Waterford
Crystal Bowls and Vases ordered special for the event from Ireland. The
Longboard & Sport Fleets also had impressive trophies, with etched leaded
crystal momentous and glass Caribbean fish. Fitting trophies for this
awesome, challenging, well organized and fun event.
