I have just purchased second hand an F2 254 Wave Thommen edition (97
model). I got it very cheaply, but had to purchase quick without doing
much research. I have searched for reviews on the net but cannot find
any. Can anyone comment on this board... specs, what sort of sailing it
is suited to etc.
I think it is 82 litres, but cannot even be sure of this.
Links to sites with reviews/specs would be appreciated, as I cannot find
any.
Regards,
Adrian
I've had the 254 for a couple of years and have really enjoyed sailing it.
The specs from F2 are: length 8'4"; width 21.5"; volume 82l; weight 16.1
lbs. I run mostly Rainbow wave and bump fins and seem to use a 10.5" swept
pointer fin mostly in flat water and a 8.5" or 9" wave fin for side-on
conditions.
I sail it in all conditions (flat, bump, wave) with wave and slalom sails
from 4.0m to 5.7m
After much hard use (wave riding and jumping), I have a split on one of my
rails that needs to be repaired and I have some soft spots between the front
and rear straps. That being said, I don't know of many production boards
that are truly bomb-proof. On the other hand, there are no dings at all on
the board, so it is pretty ding-resistant. I'm a little disappointed in the
short lifespan of the board, but it sails pretty well in a wide range of
conditions.
Hope you enjoy the ride...

I was wondering how it would handle flat water with a slalom sail and a
swept fin. I have a 12" swept fin, and a 6.0 late model slalom sail (can
be rigged very flat), that may be a little large for the board, but I
will give it a go. I also have a larger board, but I am looking forward
to the jibing on this board.
The previous owner damaged the front-bottom of the board on rocks,
though he claims no water got in the board. It was repaired quite well,
and the board was re-sprayed, so it is hardly noticable, but I weighed
the board the other day, and it came out at 20lbs with only the straps
on (no fin). It may be that the repair has added some weight in resin
and paint, but it seems like alot. I suspect it may have water inside. I
don't know whether to pursue this avenue to get the weight down or just
leave it. Have you weighed your board?
Thanks,
Adrian
I have tried various sizes of sails on a F2 254 (of a friend) and my own AHD
255 (a few years old now and very similar to the F2 254 although the F2 has
84 litres and the AHD has 75 litres volume). Don't even try a 6.0 on it! Its
upper limit is a 5.5. It is a higher wind wave board and really should be
used in the range 4.5 - 5.5m. With regard the fin, I too have tried a bump
fin on it. Your 12" (30cm) will also be too large. A better size is 28cm
(11").
I do have a copy of a few reviews on the F2. Wind Surfing (American mag),
March 1998 gave it a good review. It was considered a quick board for a wave
board. I can email you a copy if you want.
Happy sailing.
