Hi,
I'm looking for a new board that will handle best sails 5.5 and up.
This board will be my all-around. Important factors are fun with 5.7 m
sails and ability to plane early. Other board that I have is F2 95
liters so I' covered if it really blows.
I'm 170 pounds, I can waterstart and complete most jibes.
I was looking at Fanatic Bee 144, F2 Ride 284, Mistral Vision 130 and
Bic Techno 273.
I really like Fanatic Bee 144 (289), but I'm afraid that it is a little
to big to be fun with sail 5.7 (size I love to sail).
F2 Ride 284 seems to be OK too but it is new board and I have not seen
any reviews or postings about it. The same with Mistral Vision 130 and
Bic Techno 273.
I did not sail any of the boards, any input will be appreciated.
How does Fanatic Bee 144 (289) handles in 5.5 m conditions?
My old board was Bic Astro (120 liters).
Thanks!

Hi,

I own a 93l F2 Axxis and find this board perfect for my 5.6 sail. Why would
you want a bigger board for your 5.7 ?
As my second (light wind board), I am now considering AHD Free Diamond 77
that should fit in nicely with Axxis and should be able to carry 6.6+ sails
(I will probably get a 8.6). So you should be able to cover a large wind
range with 2 boards and a pair of sails for each. For example, I am aiming
at 4.7 & 5.6 for Axxis and 6.6-7.0 & 8.6-9.1 for Diamond. This should
comfortably cover something arround 8-35 knots. I'm waiting for some reviews
on Diamond. I'm about the same weight as you (76kg).

I would like sail the big board down to 5.7 because I got stuck on the
water a couple of times when I was using small board and the wind died
to the point that you can't waterstart.

Seems like your 95 L board is just about right for 5.5 to 6.5.

I have the Bee 289 and am looking for a 95 to 105 L board for anything
smaller than 7.5.

I have sailed the Bee 289 fully powered on a 6.0, and it works fine, but I
would much rather do it on a smaller board.

The boards your are looking at seem like they are suited for 7.0 to 9.0 M
sails.

Hello All,

Bruce Wylie here, Drops USA.

Just a quick idea, There is a similar post lower down
for a board in this same range.

As mentioned there I feel that you might want to consider
the Drops, Bomber 72. This is really a fun board to have.
I have one that is getting a lot of use.

For other info on the board check out the Windsurfing Magazine
Test issue. The Bomber 72 received great reviews.

As always for more info you can always reach me toll free at,

I hope this helps,

Seems to me you want an uphaulable shortboard that can be controlled
when it gets big. Do you want to freeride or race? I bought a bee 289
last year to be my "big" shortboard to replace my 290 vicace.
Unfortunatly the bee feels like a load with anything smaller than my
6.7. I am experimenting with smaller fins but it stll feels like
a longboard in "big" winds. I think you need to get say a 125 liter
slalom/freeride board, like a bee 284, veloce 288, or the bigger
f2 "ride". These boards can all handle 7.5 down to 5.5 ( with a good
couple of fins) easy and let you schlogg back to shore dry if the
wind dies.

I like the early planing/float of my bee but my vivace could handle
a bunch more wind. I usually bring my 289, my vivace 290 and a 265
when I travel more than a hour to sail.

good luck

True.
I had to swim back to shore once, when the wind totaly died out from blowing
20 knots.
I could uphaul the sail sinking to my knees, but I couldn't get moving.
If there is any wind, you can uphaul, stay afloat and schlog slowly, but you
will end up pretty much down wind.

How early can plane on your veloce 288? What sail size, your weight,
etc? Also did anyone tried F2 Ride 284? Its 130 liters and seems OK.

I'm about 225 lbs so I could just barely schlogg with bad wind and
my 7.5 on the 290 vivace. I never rode the 288 veloce but it's a very
similar (free ride) shape to the Ride. The "bigger" F2 Ride I demoed
felt smooth and loose and planed for me in about 15 knots with a 7.5. A
buddy tells me the ride is "real surfy" but he claims he always ends up
breaking f2's and to stay away. To bad. I'd say get the veloce 288, you
can save enough money for a nice mast and it'll be stronger. Get a long
plane fin for planing, a big surf fin for chop and go rip it up!

i went to a custom board for exactly this purpose.

the folks at wind obsession made me a board exactlty as i requested... an
early plaining 9'4 freeride... fast as anything, but can play a bit when
needed to. sailed it right down to 5.5 easily. wind obsessions are great
'fun' feeling boards, and i must say it again, i was most impressed by how
close it was made to my specific requirements.

you are a bit lighter than i, a 9'0 might be better, but, custom is not for
everyone... but, then, ill probably never go back. [i have an 8'7
freeride as well.]

cheers
