Does anyone know if the North XC MIX & MATCH System works as advertized?
It *seems* like a good way to cut down on costs and space requirements.
FWIW, I would be looking for a combination that would give me a 15 and a 14
foot mast.

Any opinions welcome.

Thanks

I have two 230s and two 210s in the XC 40, and I use the 460 for my 6.0
Prisma and the 230 top and 210 bottom my 5.5 and 5.0. Unfortunately,
there hasn't been enough wind for me to try the two 210s together (a
5.0 Prisma will handle a _lot_ of wind). I'm not convinced that the flex
is an exact match for a Prisma, but the system works. I can make three
different length masts from my four pieces, but not all at the same time.

Before I had the XCs I used North Race Tech and Dynamic Speed masts
and mixed tops and bottoms. They still make these, to protect the
investment of sailors who still have a lot of them.

I've never mixed mine but I have two Space Tech 230's and two 210's that I

use accordingly to give me a 460 and a 420. I really like mine. They have
a two year warranty and are covered in breaking waves.

jim,

Yea, it works. I have 2 spacetech bottoms, and 2 tops of 200 and 220
cm. I also use a 245cm "racetech" (lighter) top with my largest sail
(5.6). The sails rig fine, handle well and with the more wave oriented
bottom pieces, I'm not uncomfortable taking the 5.6 into the waves with
the lighter top piece.

Seems to work for me. With three halves:
230 base (25 IMCS)
190 base (22 IMCS)
230 top

I can make two masts:

460, 25 IMCS
420, 22 IMCS

Although the 230 top is not "recommended" with the 190 base, it rigs very well
on my '95 North Zeta's -- 2.9 to 4.7. The 460 mast is for the 5.3 and 5.9
Hot Gridlocks. I plan on purchasing a 210-210 mast in the near furture for a
backup 420 (24 IMCS).

You can't mix different sizes w/o changing the flex pattern. For example:
If you use a 230 top with a 210 bottom, you get a curve that is relatively
stiffer in the top, and softer in the base - not a good thing. It might
look and sail O.K., but if you compare it to a true constant curve you
will notice the improvement.
