I want to buy a new larger board and have narrowed it down to the
Mistral Explosion 295 and the F2 Xantos 295-II. I had pretty much
decided on the Mistral until I read the previous posts on the lack of
durability of the Mistral products. Now I'm confused. My own experience
is that I know happy and sad groups of owners of both brands. Does
anybody have advise for me?

Steve:

Have you considered AHD, Pro-Tech or Berkey?

In my (very humble) opinion a few more dollars will get you a far superior
board and support the "semi-custom" shapers who make these great boards
(especially Pro-Tech and Berkey).

I'm sure you won't be disappointed in performance.

Since i've commented on seeing a number of broken Mistrals:
This was explicitely for older model years from 96 and older.
I do not have any experience with the durability of the newer
models, thus can't comment for or against them.

I'm a real slacker about board-protection - i.e. I buy 2 fins rather
than a board bag etc - and my Xantos II 295 has suffered some appaling
neglect fron its no-good owner. Not a problem - hasn't dinged a bit
despite my worst efforts :-)

It's also a joy to sail - but I've not tried the Mistral.

If you're talking about the Xantos CSE version then the score might be
different on the durability front.

Best wishes - John

I love my 295 II and have carted it all over the place without
problems. I also leave it in a board bag on top of the car in the hot
sun. All seems well so far. It's great to sail!

I have had the explosion since nov 97 and I am very happy with both board and
durability. Board is very fast and planes early and gybes like a peach. ( no
much better than a peach!)
Naturally one needs to look after the board re marking it on gravel and the
like but will absorb impacts well - both excellent boards - have fun - Paul

I've got boards built by both Mistral and F2 and like both mfrs. a lot. I have
a Xantos 325 and a Mistral Screamer. Ican't say that I have noticed any great
differences in durability between the two. Then again, we take good care of our
stuff. I would make my decision based on performance of the boards under
consideration,not on rumors about durability.

This one keeps coming up - Mistrals & F2s falling apart. For what its
worth, I've had no problems with my two '96 Mistrals. I guess you can
always get a bad one in any mass-produced product, but that is what
warranties are for. These two companies must sell thousands of boards each
year, many to hire companies in Maui and other resort destinations where
the boards are pounded day in, day out, day after day after day.... Why
would these hire companies keep buying them if they fall apart?

One other point - what about Fanatic - no one on this newsgroup seems to
be canning these. Maybe they offer better reliability?

Hi, yes, Fanatic do offer better durability as they generally have a better
construction... Of all the plastic-covered boards that I operate on, only
Fanatic have a halfway decent construction under the plastic skin. I get
VERY FEW Fanatics that I have to do major surgery on, most of their problems
are minor, like small splits in the seams, or the plastic covering peeling
off around the nose area from boom impact ---- (the owner not using a
'Deviator')... But overall, they seem to have the best construction of all
the 'plastic fantastics'... Good winds...

I concur with Tom - I'm close to your weight and am quite pleased with my 1996
Pro-Tech 300. Perhaps you should seek a check ride on the new PT 296!

Depends on how you sail them and how often.
A smaller, less than 75 kg sailor, who sails once or twice a week in summer
and not particularly aggressively ,no problemo.
But if you are 90kg and like sailing powered up, if the finbox does not blow
the bottom will delaminate
or it will get soft under the footpads, guaranteed.
A beginner puts far less loading onto a board, in normal use than an expert
sailor,unless you want
to include dropping booms onto the boards nose, which no board will withstand
anyway.

I'm pretty experienced - been at it 13 years and weigh 75 kg. I sail both
boards pretty well powered up - the Energizer up to 25 knots with my
7.0IQ3D, and the Electron down to my 4.2 Convertigo in winds 20 to 50
knots with corresponding chop. I don't jump either much, and yes, I
do look after them, but they both get sailed mighty powered-up at times.

Maybe I've been lucky, but this whole thing tends to bemuse me somewhat -
I can understand the odd failure, but blanket statements that they all
fail? Put it this way - around here I've seen more customs turn soft or
crack open for no apparent reason than Mistrals or F2s fail inexplicably.
Then again, maybe all us production board owners around here have been
really lucky:-)

Oh, forgot to mention - I sold my local custom 275 6kg epoxy for the
Energizer, and I know which I prefer! I don't doubt that some customs are
fantastic, and much more up to date than production shapes, but the custom
board I got was, as it turned out, not what I wanted - at least I knew
what I was getting with a production board.

Fair winds
SS.

I have a Xantos 295 in excellent condition. I live in ohio. John (614) 975-4114.
I would let it go for a great price. We would just probably have to ship it to you.

Just wondering...

Lately, I've noticed numerous replies to very old posts, for example
this reply to an original post dated back in July 1998 and thus about
15 years old, and hardly beleive that the original poster still read
this newsgroup...

I've seen this behaviour in different newsgroups, and have also noticed
that everyone who reply to these old posts all have a *****@gmail.com
mail address...

Yep, I've noticed it too. Google groups makes the archive very accessible, so
if you were searching for something specific, it doesn't seem to distinguish
much from yesterday or 15 years ago. However, the dates are there too so I
would guess most of this is people trying to have fun. What do you say,
