I need one of those roof boxes for sail transportation...it needs to fit
larger sails (up to 7.5). I've never owned one and have no idea which are
good and which...aint. Any recommmendations?

Sure, build one out of 1/4" plywood and epoxy. Don't build and internal fame,
just use 1/2" strips in the corners for strength. Don't put in a side
door--they just add weight and complexity. Use a sloped nose (i.e. bend the
top down to meet the bottom) instead of a sharply angled one (less complexity
and no internal frame). Put a hinged, lockable door on the back. Paint the
whole box, inside and out (paint the inside before final assmebly), with
outdoor house paint -- I bought a mis-mixed/matched gallon for $5. The whole
project took a little over 10 hours to build, uses a total of 5 pieces of
plywood (top, bottom, sides, and the back door), plus 4 pieces of molding. I
built mine for less than $100, and it's happily living on the roof of my car
year-round here in the rainy northwest. It's light, strong, and hold 6 sails.

Wellll. I just went through this on rec.windsurfing about a month ago.
It boiled down to a few choices. They are ALL expensive however. If
you want to carry a bunch of stuff you can consider:
1. Thule - they make a couple of boxes, but there's one (I forget the
model but it's the biggest they make) that would hold enough stuff. I'm
unsure about the 7.5 for length, however, so you'd have to measure.
It's about 350-400 bucks.
2. Quiverack. This is a very fancy and nice gel-coated fiberglass box
which holds a lot of stuff. They have one with doors on the side
(gull-winged) and it's made to put a board ON TOP. It's VERY expensive-
about $800.
3. One guy in Washington State I could look up and put you in touch
with who makes apparently a very nice box, similar price as 2.
4. Make your own out of plywood and 1x2's. After looking at the above
choices this sounded a lot more reasonable. Actually a friend here did
that and it's not bad if you take care in construction. It holds a HUGE
amount of stuff. I borrowed it and put 12 sails and 4 masts in there.
Try that on a commercial box. For around town it held my board and 3
sails, boom, wetsuit, mast and base. YESSSSS.

If you want more info email me.

Kemp Scott (206) 827-6373 Sells windboarder for around $800. Biggest and
best design of all. Fits yak or thule rack. We all own em and love em.

I have a box that was made by Automaxi, although I could not get a 7.5
in it I can get a 7.0 on with a little bit of "help". I think that
Thule is making one that could hold it, but I am not for sure on the
lenght of that one either. Good luck..

I have a Thule "Adventeurer 615" with inside dimensions of 91" L X 26.6" W X
6.8-14.4" H. I can just barely fit My 7.5 Gasstra Course Slalom Sail
length wise in, along with the rest of my quiver (6.7, 6.2, 5.7, 5.0, 4.6,
3.9) inside along with three booms, harness and a shortie wetsuit. The box
cost ~ $400 and attaches to either Thule (rectangular) or Yakima (round) bars.

One interesting note, My box exploded, ie.literaly blew apart, while driving
over a bridge at 65 mph during a gusty trip to hatteris. I contacted Thule,
it was replaced promptly and they said that they had not heard of this
happening before, but given the wind related nature of our sport this incident
leaves me a little uneasy about using this box. Thule does make a bigger,
double wall construction box that is 92.5" long on the inside, the Combi Box
600, but its also wider ~ 3' so you have to see if there is still enough room
for putting your boards on the racks beside the box. These boxes are also the
premo way to cary your ski gear during the cold season.

Good shreddin'

Guy I sail with lost his entire quiver when the top came off his
Thule box last year.

Boxes that are hinged in front are, IMHO, less prone to that sort
of failure...

I feel the best box made is the Pack A Sport.
It is made of fiberglass, not plastic.
It is the largest available on the market.
Unfortunately it is the most expensive by far.

Actually the Quiverack Race Mk III or Gull-Wing are as big, if
not bigger than the Pack-a-sport. I do not know their costs but we
are in the $700-800 range. It may seem a bit steep but when it comes
to the security of your gear, I wouldn't compramise. Solid fiberglass
is the way to go!!!

Peter,
Great idea! When I head out to distant windsurfing spots (for me 3 1/2
hour drive to the Gorge) I take my kayak along and put my sails in it. The
kayak holds about 6 sails. Since I also take my kayak paddle along I have
something to do if it doesn't blow.

MTVNewsGuy,

My buddy owns the Thule box, I own the Yakima box (Spacecase ? - the one
larger than the Rocketbox). Before buying, I looked at alot of boxes. I
thought you might want to hear what I learned.

1. Get the largest box you can get. I originally bought the Rocketbox
and ended up selling it and repurchasing the Spacebox. You can get
the Spacebox on top of the car with 58" bars and still have plenty
of room for the windsurfer and mast. The extra room IS NEEDED.
I put seven sails (4.0 - 7.0), two wetsuits, boom, and a bunch of
other stuff up there. By the way, it will fit a 7.5 sail.

2. Be sure you secure the box shut. I read above that someone's Thule
opened up on him. I have a friend with the Spacebox (just like mine)
whose top also opened up. The usual cause of this is thinking you
have locked the front of the box. ALWAYS CHECK TO BE SURE!!!!!!!
There should be an audible click when it locks. You can also feel
it lock when you shut the box properly.

3. The Quiverboxes are nice. They are definitely more durable than
the Thule or Yakima's and are longer. I cannot fit the masts in
the box. You can in the Quiverboxes. However, the tradeoff is
they are MUCH heavier. I didn't want all that weight on the roof
of my car - so I bought the Yakima.

Good luck. They are pricey, but a good investment. I use mine all the
time.

Yes! Because the door opens downward, not up (On rear door models).
Also, the side door opening model opens out and then up and has
clearance for a board on top.

>Do you need special bracket to fix the box to a car roof???

We include a bracket that has dimension of 2.1cm thick by 4.5cm wide,
so your bars can be in the tolerance of 2.5cm thick x 4.5cm wide.

>Does the box will fit on Thule rack?????

Yes! Perfectly! As well as Yakima, and other bar type racks mounts.
Factory installed racks have to be answered on a model by model basis.
BUT, if they fit in the dimensions listed above you will be ok.
