Panhandle Windsurfers
Dear Members,
I hope that all is well and that you have had the opportunity to get out on
the water. I think that the Club can really grow this year. We have one
of the best areas around for windsurfing when you consider all of the
put-in sites and variety of water conditions from bay to beach. If we can
grow the Club interest, we can grow the sport as well. Bring along your
interested friends.

FIN SEMINAR
Let me say that I weep for those of you who missed the Fin Seminar at the
Bauman's. The information was well presented and informative covering
everything from fin shape and choice to manufacture. We also got to tour
the Carbon Fin Workshop where Lightening Fins are produced. A special
THANKS to the Bauman's for the program and food.

MAY 2 - WINDSURFING PARTY
What a blast! The wind finally blew. The party at Naval Live Oaks was
really fun. Thirty-eight people attended and 22 sails were counted. The
wind was about 12-15. Burgers and hot dogs were served compliments of the
Club and a special thanks to the Solomon's for preparing the food. It was
beautiful to be windsurfing with all of the other sails. We'll have to do
this again for sure. We also signed up several new members.

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS

If you are interested in hosting a program at your house, please speak up
at the next meeting that you attend. Thanks

**SAIL DEMO**
This will be our next Club event and it should be a great one. Jack
Stringfellow at Rogue Wave has invited us to hear Fred Dey give an informal
discussion on the new Mistral and Naish Sails. Fred is the area
Representative for these sails. The event will be in Fort Walton (See Map)
on June 6th 12:00 - 4:00pm at Leeside Park (Gulf Islands National
Seashore). Persons attending will be able to Demo these "No-Cam" sails for
free. Don't miss the rare chance to sail the newest Mistral and Naish
Sails around. Feel free to bring your own equipment, but all you need is
your bathing suit and a harness. This is the same weekend that the Billy
Bowlegs Festival starts in Fort Walton.

LONG DISTANCE RACE
July 18th, from Juana's & Sailors Grill at Navarre. Mobile and Tallahassee
Clubs invited. Expect more information in the next newsletter.

Now that's a novel and neat (to me) idea -- putting a club newsletter right
here on the net! Our club spends a fortune on postage and a lot of government
(at least taxpayers') time on newsletter layout, and nobody else gets to see
what's going on here.

Airing the newsletter also encourages more club members to get wired, which is
(probbaly) a goood thing. Most of our club members and other local sailors
haven't even found rec.ws yet (I won't argue the pros and cons of THAT), and
they may expand their horizons, gain some enthusiasm (most don't even sail
during our only windy seasons (Spring and some Falls), and/or tear their hair
out if they had an interactive newsletter and found rec.BS ... er, rec.ws.

Good show, Panhandlers.

But, tell me ... is there really any good windsurfing there outside of
thunderstorms or hurricanes? My primary recollection of growing up in southern
Alabama and of 6 years at FSU was heat, rain, and either dead or stormy air.

Thanks for the Kudo's Mike. We just want to spread the word that this
sport is incredibly, unbelievably fun and easy too. We're having more
events like the tour of the local fin manufacturer and demo days with shops
and the "casual" races in order to facilitate a less intimidating
atmosphere.

There is excellent windsurfing apart from the storms....not that there's
anything wrong with them ;) Our El Nino spring was fantastic with steady
winds @ 15mph + for most of March and April. Typical summer weather is 95F
with 90-100% humidity and 3-5mph with an intense thunderstorm mid
afternoon. Around 4ish the wind usually builds to around 12-15 and begins
to taper off after 7pm.

There are countless launch spots to accommodate various wind directions and
conditions and....we have some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
The sand is as white as the background on your screen.

Summer does not provide the most optimum planing conditions but last year I
bought an AHD310 w/ a 8.7 VX3 from Jeff at the Tackle Shack and I'm not
sitting on the beach anymore.

Is it true that there is a new AVS design that will plane at 2mph! :) and
where can I get one!

P.S.
Mike...you must not be from Alabama. People from there are from
"L.A....Lower Alabama" not southern Alabama. (I grew up in a small town
called Brewton)

I must admit I'm a Yankee by comparison -- my home town of Elba is 15 miles
farther north than Brewton.

My wife's family was originally from Lennox/Repton (about 20 miles from Brewton)

How bout we have a rec.windsurfing gettogether in Brewton?

BTW, Mike, the panhandle has some great sailing but not usually in the
mid- late summer. I've had great sessions from Pensacola, P. City, Ft.
Walton to Gulf Shores.

Nothing beats blasting on a 6.5 when the water is still warm in the late fall.

Regards,
William

Only if you're willing to sail on a catfish pond ;)

That can be arranged... an uncle raises them and has seven ponds.

Of course, that means we can provide an after sail nosh.
