hello all

i'm looking for something bigger than my 6.2, but dont want to buy a new
mast. my boom has quite a bit of extension left.

what's the biggest sail that runs on a 460 mast with a reasonable amount
of mast extension?

Thanks!

PS please email me directly, as well as the list...

I'm able to run my North 7.0 no cam on my 460 mast with full extension.
But I don't think it's ideal and I wish I had a 490.

I have used my friend's NP 8.1m Supersonic on a 460 Fibrespar 3000, with a
40cm extension. It felt ok.

I've got a 7.5 Synthesis that works great on a 460.
Think the luff is 485.

Windwing makes a sail called the Synthesis which is a zero, one, two, or
3 cam sail that has incredible performance in either mode, and the 7.5
rigs on a 460 mast. The Windwing Race 7.7 also works well on a 460
mast. I also just tried a Gaastra 8.0 that rigs on a 460 with no
extension. It is one of those "whip-tip" sails and it seemed to work
pretty well, especially in light air.

it depends on the sail manufacturer and model year. Go to fiberspar's Web
site and their interactive sail/mast guide.

With the new truncated head sail designs you can rig really big sails on
suprisingly short masts. For instance on the windwing line which I am most
familiar with (since I ride them) you can put a 8.3 race sail on a 460
because it has a 510cm luff so it would require 50cm extension. I would
probably make the 7.7 with a 490 luff the biggest for a 460 though, because
I am heavy and need the stiffness of the longer mast, not necessarily the
length. Probably other manufacturers with cut-off "truncated" head sails
have fairly similar specs.

Most sailmakers offer sails over 7.0 m2 that fit on 460 mast. You can run a
NP Supersonic 8.1. With an extra long mast extension you could also rig a
Windwing 8.3 Synthesis. Either of these sails will provide great low end and
great handling (specially for the size).

The question is what size sail is right for you and that depends on what you
are going to do with it, what kind and size of board you have, how much do
you weigh.

If I was getting the next bigger size from 6.2 I would go to a size between
6.9 and 7.5. That is about the right jump up.

hope this helps

With the new sails of 99 with blockhead technology or shear tip you can
take very large sails on a 460 mast (ie. NP supersonic 7.4m. The
downturn of this ne head technology is that the small sails now require
smaller masts. I believe that it is all marketing to sell more equipment
by obliging people to buy new masts when getting new sails...

I found just the reverse. With the new Gaastra sails (for example) you can
rig anything from you 4.5m wave sail right up to your 6.5 and above. I am
not exactly sure of the cutoff, but I have found that I can reduce the
number of masts I need by at least 1.

The Sailworks XT 7.4 rigs on a 460 mast (luff 482) IMCS 25. The boom
length is quite short 209 max, this is the reason I bought one rather
than a 7.4 Z1, as it would rig on my middle boom. I have sailed the XT
rigged on a 480 Gastraa WC mast (Kilwell) IMCS 29, but it seemed back
handed and powerful. I was on a Roberts 25 in winds that peaked at 32.8
mph, by this time it was getting hard to sheet in. A friend sailing with
me on a 7.8 Z1 was still okay. I got a pretty good speed on the GPS 35.4
mph (30.7 knots) and although it was as fast as the Z1, I did not think
the XT was working properly. I have been faster on the same set up with
my 6.8 NP LTD in slightly less wind. I have since rigged the XT on my
Gastraa 450 IMCS 25 mast (32cm ext) but have not been able to try it in
that much wind yet. The best wind I have had with this set up on our
speed course is 20 mph. I only managed to get on the plane once but got
a speed on the GPS of 29.9 mph. The XT felt much better with the softer
mast, but I will have to see how it is when the wind blows again. I know
sails like the big Z1's can take more wind rigged on softer masts, than
they can rigged on a stiff one.
I rig my 8.3 Z1 on a Gastraa WC (Fiberspar) 5m IMCS 32 mast, slightly
stiffer than recommended. Although it goes well, I find it quite a
tiring sail, I am beginning to think I should get a softer mast for
this sail as well.

Depends if you have a Powerex mast with the available 30 cm extension tubes . .
.

Hi Robert

I agree that with Gaastra it is just the opposite but that is because of
their Total Flow technology which makes their masts much shorter. Thats
why I would never buy a Gaastra simply because their top of the range
has the total flow system and which means that you need even smaller
mast Ie.: 400 or 430cm. By the way the sail range I use in my country is
5.0m to 7.5 so I need at least two masts. Neil Pryde don't do the vario
top anymore so I am buggered.

Depends if ur looking at new or old model sails. the new sails can rig on
much much smaller masts. but apart from late model sails i would say 6.8
would be about the limit although 7 is possible but not recommended

Many 99 sails are designed to use 460s up to 8.0 or so with only a little
extension.

This is a good one. Also, take a look at Gaastra's new ('00) Total Flow
Freeride (no Cam) and Freeslalom (3 cam) both use standard stiffness
masts, and they rig up to either 8.5 or 9.0 on a 460/25. I have seen
the 8.0 and it looks nice.

Nice and light, I use it on my 87 Liter Pro-Tech Master Blaster in 13-16mph
range. I weigh 165lbs. It was a great catch because I didn't need to upgrade
my Carbon

pretty keen.

But what are the sails like?
