Hi,

I just picked up a work of art!

My new Formula racing board is a Lab 101, from Mike's Lab
(http://www.mikeslab.com/) that I ordered last September.
It makes me faster just looking at it. The man is one of
those great craftsmen who have taken their craft to the
level of art.

But I'm torn: I can't wait to sail it, but I'm terrified of
dinging it in any way! Oh the torment!

At least there is approximately zero wind on the bay so it'll
probably be a little while before I have a chance to try it.

Sarasota Jack better watch out at the Velocity Games this year.
If I manage not to destroy this board there's no way I'll come
in last. Second to last, maybe, but not last. ;-)

Heh heh heh. And it may be too late for Jack to get one
of these for himself in time for Texas. Rumor has it that
Mike's got a huge number of orders. It'd be no wonder, each one
is made by hand by Mike himself.

Certainly WMD of a different color! (Mine's got blue trim, btw.)

Cheers,
Cliff

Hi Cliff,

Take a small ball peen hammer, and put a couple of dimples in the top
deck,
then it won't be a virgin any more and you can get out and ride the
thing
like it was meant to be ridden.

I had a Mike's lab slalom board for a while. Fast, fast, fast!

Hi Craig,
A ball peen hammer is too elegant...he likes boom whacks and rocks...;-)
http://surfingsports.com/images/cliff_frost1.jpg

The duct taped nose is going to be a nice addition to his new board...
(what is it with duct tape and plastic causing paranoia?...;-)
he took about 8" off of his Naish when he visited last Spring...
plus, I don't know how he's going to fit it in his van...but, he is the
"Dogen" and prolly has the origami solution...

Yes, it has cutouts. It also has a flap.

I don't know how to describe rails, what are you looking for?

Thanks,
Cliff

Cliff,

Let me help you out. I'll be glad to field test your new baby while you
are waiting for the wind to come up, and I can probably "deflower" her for
you too! My venerable and several times repaired F175 is propped up in the
garage with the nose down draining water from its latest booboo. The wind
was gusting to near 30 mph on Saturday, and out of the NW where we get the
longest fetch down the bay. It was also darn cold, I don't think it got over
65F all day long! Got caught off guard powering up out of a tack and
catapulted, and that was with a little "gurly" 7.0! I don't get enough
practice with the tiny sails it seems.

Congratulations.

Thanks.

I'll check the rails on my way to work (I have to go down 54 steps to
look at it.)

> how many of you berkeley guys race?

At any given CalCup race there seem to be 20-30 people. I don't think I've
ever seen less than 20. I don't honestly know how many are from Berkeley
as opposed to other parts of the Bay Area--offhand there are for sure 5 who
live in Berkeley city limits. I'd guess about 10 live in or very near.

At the San Francisco Friday night races there are typically 15-20 with
sometimes a larger crowd.

Cheers,
Cliff

I was sympathetic all the way until I read 7.0! Sounds like 9.0 weather
to me. When I can't handle the 9.0 and formula I go to 6.5 and 100 liter
board. Still and all, I expect to have several nose repairs this season,
given that the inevitable always seems to happen.

I'm sure it would have been 9.0 for you SF Bay Sailors. :-)
Next biggest sail out was 6.0 on a 100 liter board. 5.5 was a pretty hot
set up, and folks were planing just fine on 4.5s, but I don't think even the
gusts were over 30 mph, we're (I'm) a lot more used to stretching the lower
end of Formula sailing around here than the upper end.

I actually had more fun on my 12.5 the evening before. Sunny, Warm,
Flat-Flat water with almost no power boats out, just zooming around watching
the sun come down. A nice relaxing end to the week.

Hi,

I responded to wardog's post right away but the post got bounced for
some reason. Here it is:

Oh man, I really want to! The day I had sailing the Evo 92 in
Morro Bay was wonderful and I haven't been out since (last November.)

But my wife is in India and I have a whole furry family to take
care of (dog and 3 cats). I basically can't go more than a day's
drive for a while.

On the plus side, I'm earning heavy-duty spousal support points and am
planning to use them *all* windsurfing. You coming to the velocity
games in May?

Thanks,
Cliff

Of course, you're an accomplished sailor. Under my feet it won't be
quite so fast but still much faster than my old *board 186x (which I
donated to the local sailing club).

Cliff

How can that be?!?!
You practically control the new fiber-optic internet from the People's

Yeah, but that makes it harder! I've got to be like Caesar's wife and
all. I'm already pushing the envelope (very mildly) posting from a
work account to this group.

I'll send some to Jeff, since he offered.
