Who makes a good single-cam 5.0 that doesn't use much monofilm, but has all
the other features of modern sails? I like the durability and visibility of
vinyl window, and durability of the old laminated stuff, and I don't have to
treat the sail so gingerly in rigging/transporting.

Try Windwing. They still had their mylar convertible in their '95 catalog.
For '96, they're putting vinyl windows in all their single-cam sails, which
will also use the reinforced mono(?)film. They should be pretty tough sails,
as well as being top notch designs.

Northwaves sail great, and my 3 yr old sails look great after gorge abuse.

This is very good news. The mono windows on my 2yrold MPs
are so cloudy that I can't see anything going down the line.
I now feel for the lip and sometimes it just sort of taps me
on the shoulder.

The Diamond Air is the best recreational sail I've ever
used and an ultralight rig is a must for east coast light air
wave sailing, but when the swells get overhead, you can't
screw up. Vinyl/dacron laminates are still needed if you
want to get three or more years out of your wave gear.

You may want to check out the Ultimate or Universal slalom from Aerotech.
Both are available in mylar. The ultimate is more slalom oriented, while
the universal is more wave oriented.

A friend of mine has a Neil Pryde 4.9 sail called a "RAF Speed" I believe. It is a high aspect sail, no monofilm, vinyl window. I th=
ink it is fantastic, cause it is easy to rig, and goes upwind much better than any of our other cambered race sails (due to the high=
aspect ratio). It is also easy to handle in higher winds, I use it in 20-30 knot conditions.
If you can find one, it is a good buy. He bought his used, I believe it was manufactured 3-5 years ago.
