F2 Xanthos 285 or a BIC Veloce 278?

My wife has finally given me the OK to buy a new board. I am beginning my
3rd year. Last year I moved from a Fanatic Cat to a (very) used Cobra
290. I learned to waterstart but the jibes have so far eluded me. I am
44 - 6' 0" - 185 lb. I am considering either an F2 Xanthos 285 or a BIC
Veloce 278. Does anyone have any comments or opinions or a better option?

Thanks.

HiMike

My brother recently bought a 285 Xanthos, and although I have not
sailed, he is hogging it, he likes it immensely. I own a Xanthos-310,
and it is an excellent board, gybes by itself, pretty tough and has
nice straps / pads. I suggest the Xanthos shapes work!

I also own a Mistral Screamer II and a Shark 295. but rate the
Xanthos as more friendly.

I used to sail Bic and found them to be good boards, one point, the
Bic fin box is a trim box on the Veloce which is a more adjustable
design than the Xanthos non-adjustable power box.

Enjoy the pleasures of decision making, they both are good boards.

Not wishing to make your chioce more difficult but I would definitly look at
the Fanatic Gecko 295 and 278. The 295 in particular is getting great
write-ups as a friendly, easy to gybe board suited to a wide range of
conditions and is one of the most versatile boards of this size around.

Also worth considering is the new Mistral Explosion II, or Screamer II (my
board).

If you sail regularly with big(ish) sails (>6.5m), I would probably go for a
285-295 board.

A Mistral Explosion II offers an option. At 185 lbs you can still uphaul it in
a pinch and it is especially fast. Going into a jibe with speed is an important
element of carrying off a jibe and the Explosion II should be faster than the others.
Despite Mistral's claim of the Explosion being 120 L, I suspect
it is a bit smaller-- perhaps 115-116 L, considering how it floats when I'm standing
on it at 195 lbs and near 0 wind.
Another nice feature is the
the Mistral fin screw which allows easy
changing or removal of the fin without a screwdriver. Also in comparing
the boards, take a look at how the footstraps are mounted. All of the boards
mentioned have a single screw, which can allow twisting of the ends of
the footstraps. Mistral's approach seems the best to me for locking them in
place.

Check out the new 1997 Fanatic Bee 294. 135 liter volume and super easy
jibing make it a dream to sail. Scoop rocker line is set up to ease onto
a plane without pumping--just hook in and go!

Contact Fanatic for more info.

Jack,

The F2 Xantos footstraps DON'T twist - they have a circle of little knobs
around the screw that engage in indentations around the screw hole. I've
sailed my Xantos 325 in way too much wind and the straps were rock solid.
Independent of that, I think it's difficult to go wrong with any of the
F2 Xantos, Bic Veloce, or similarly sized Mistral boards.

I have the F2 285....love it, straps, however do twist, really
crank'em done, the fin it comes with is pretty good for 5.7-6.4. Good
thing about the 285, it can be used in 5.5-7.5, good range. Buy it
and a 88liter conv. to complete your quiver.
