To convert a speed in Knots to MPH multiply by 1.15.

To convert a speed in MPH to knots multiply by 0.868.

Our weather Bureau gives us wind speed in Kilometers per hour

To convert a reading in Kph to Knots multiply by 1.85.

Many posters from North America don't specify units.
What do you normally use? I assume when it's blowing
3.5 you're refering to the sail you used, but what's
40 gusting 60 ?

Ian

I posted this in our internal bulletin board some time ago so US and
European sailors could figure out what the other was talking about:

Subject: Re: Knots vs KM

More accurately, to convert knots to km/hour:

1 knot = 1 Nautical Mile per Hour
1 Nautical Mile = 1.8532 Kilometres
1 Kilometre = 0.539 Nautical Miles
1 Nautical Mile = 1.096 Miles

45 knots = 83.394 kph = 49.32 mph.
